Carson Daly called out for ‘horrible’ treatment of Mariah Carey in resurfaced ‘Total Request Live’ clip
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Carson Daly is the most recent celebrity to be criticized online following the reemergence of a controversial Mariah Carey 'Total Request Live' clip.
The "horrible" reception that Carey received when Daly hosted the show in the early 2000s has drawn attention back to the star's 'TRL' appearance in the noughties with fans demanding an apology.
Mariah Carey's 2001 appearance on 'TRL' resurfaces
When Mariah Carey made an appearance on 'Total Request Live' in the early 2000s, the hitmaker raised eyebrows when she arrived with an ice cream cart and appeared to have taken Carson Daly by surprise, who claimed he "didn't know" about her appearance.
Daly further bitterly criticized Carey for "stripping" on live TV and claimed she "lost her mind". Fans now are demanding an apology to be given to the singer, per The US Sun.
Many were perplexed by Carey's appearance on 'TRL' when she sang her classic song 'Loverboy' from the 'Glitter' movie while sporting a t-shirt that read 'Loverboy'. Daly too appeared equally shocked.
The host at the time, Daly, looked confused and seemingly unsure of why she had come to the show.
He asked Carey "What are you doing?" as the singer proceeded to take off her t-shirt.
Then Carey removed the light purple t-shirt, exposing a strappy vest t-shirt below and some gold hotpants.
Again, Daly said, "What are you doing?" before stating that "Mariah Carey is stripping on 'TRL' right now." He then wondered, "Is it my birthday and I didn't know about it?"
Following the resurfacing of the 2001 clip on social media, online users have been demanding an apology from the television personality to be delivered to the 'Obsessed' singer.
Carey's representative claimed in 2001 that the singer experienced an "emotional and physical breakdown" following her appearance on 'TRL'. After this, Carey spent a brief time at a rehabilitation facility.
However, Carey revealed in her memoir 'The Meaning of Mariah Carey,' published in 2020, that what transpired in 2001 was not a "breakdown", but rather "somatization" brought on by stress, fatigue, and past trauma.
Mariah Carey reveals how 2001 'TRL' appearance resulted in 'nasty, never-ending story'
'All I Want For Christmas Is You' singer Mariah Carey described how her schedule was "relentless" and how her 'TRL' appearance coincided with her getting ready for the 'Glitter' soundtrack's release.
Carey wrote in her memoir that she "was giving as much as I could" at the time, and all of this occurred as she got ready for the release of 'Glitter' and its soundtrack. According to her, she had a "relentless" schedule and "nowhere in my itinerary was there R-E-S-T."
Carey brought an ice cream cart to what she described in her memoir as "a highly unrehearsed" encounter with host Daly, and she "crashed" the broadcast.
In contrast to Daly's claim that she was "stripping on 'TRL'", Carey wrote, "I certainly was not stripping -- I was revealing," per TooFab.
She admitted that her appearance was "a bit sloppy," labeling the entire performance "A. Stunt. Gone. Awry."
She wrote, "I was like a stand-up comic who bombed a set," she sai.
"All performers bomb, but my bombing set off a chain reaction that placed a target on my back."
The singer claimed in her book that her bomb "mushroomed into a big, nasty, never-ending story" at a time when social media was preventing celebs from trying to control their narrative.
Carson Daly slammed for 'horrible' treatment of Mariah Carey during 2001 'TRL' appearance
One Reddit user posted a brief 30-second clip of Mariah Carey's appearance on the 'TRL' show from 2001 and wrote, "Can someone explain why Mariah Carey's ice cream cart appearance on TRL was considered a "mental breakdown" in 2001?"
One took to the comment section and wrote, "God I remember this time, the way everybody treated her was horrible. The media were out of control."
"And Carson Daly still pretends to be a goodie two shoes but was shady AF always, especially with Tara Reid," remarked one.
Another wrote, "If I'm remembering correctly from her memoir, Carson essentially set her up because they had arranged the appearance together...But when she actually arrived, he pretended that she was crashing the set and it made her look unhinged for "randomly" showing up with the ice cream. Lambs, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong."
"Carson was such a douche for setting her up. I actually think Mariah came off as cute here," seethed one.
Another user wrote in part: "It was a pre-planned stunt that Carson decided to sabotage by pretending Mariah shouldn't have even been there."
