LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Celine Dion's new documentary, 'I Am: Celine Dion', offers an intimate and heart-wrenching look into her life with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS).

The Grammy winning singer reveals her most challenging moments, including a harrowing 10-minute seizure that left her paralyzed.

In the documentary, Dion openly discusses the difficulty of losing control over her body, sharing, "I don't know how to express it, like, it's just … you know, like, to not have control of yourself?"

Diagnosed with SPS in December 2022 after months of debilitating muscle spasms and stiffness, Dion's journey with this rare autoimmune disorder has been fraught with pain and uncertainty.

According to the Mayo Clinic, SPS is characterized by involuntary stiffness and painful muscle spasms often triggered by emotional or physical stimuli.

'I Am: Celine Dion' does not shy away from showing the singer's new reality. Despite her determination to live and perform as usual, Dion is occasionally sidelined by severe seizures. In one particularly moving scene, the 56-year-old singer experiences a full-body seizure after a medical evaluation, leaving her paralyzed for several minutes.

Sports medicine therapist Terrill Lobo explains, "Part of the disease is that as soon as you go into a contraction, sometimes … the signal to release it doesn’t understand, so it ends up just staying in a contracted position." During these episodes, Dion's medical team administers Valium and nasal spray, but when symptoms persist, hospitalization becomes a consideration to prevent a crisis.

Paralyzed and sobbing, Dion communicates by squeezing a team member's hand until she regains control. She later confides in her team, expressing feelings of embarrassment over such incidents.

Since revealing her SPS diagnosis, Dion has been transparent with her fans about the impact on her life and career. Forced to cancel her Courage World Tour, which had resumed in 2022 after a Covid-19 hiatus, she continues to make public appearances. Dion surprised fans with an onstage moment at the 2024 Grammys and has attended several hockey games with her sons.

'I Am: Celine Dion' is streaming now on Prime Video.
