Chappell Roan explains why she didn't attend White House's Pride gig, says 'I'm not going to be a monkey'
WASHINGTON, DC: Chappell Roan has revealed the reason behind turning down White House’s Pride event invite.
The ‘Red Wines Supernova’ crooner said she was not happy with Joe Biden administration's stand on various issues. “I’m not going to go to the White House because I am not going to be a monkey for Pride,” Roan told Rolling Stone.
Chappell Roan says she wanted to read poetry at White House
The 26-year-old admitted that she first considered going to the event and was planning on reading a poetry in protest of the US government’s support of Israel’s war in Gaza.
“I had picked out some poems from Palestinian women. I was trying to do it as tastefully as I could because all I wanted to do was yell. I had to find something that’s tasteful and to the point and meaningful, and not make it about me and how I feel,” she said.
Determined to raise her voice in front of the president, she finally decided to cancel her plan after a conversation with the publicist.
“You f*ck with the president and the government, your security is not the same, and neither is your family’s,” the publicist reasoned with Roan, reports Yahoo News.
The singer explained that after her decision to turn down the invite from the White House, a few of her fans concluded it was due to her support for Donald Trump and Republicans.
“It is not so black and white that you hate one and you like the other. No matter how you say it, people are still going to be pissed for fucking some reason. I’m not going to go to the White House because I am not going to be a monkey for Pride. And thank God I didn’t go because they just made a huge statement about trans kids a couple weeks ago,” Roan told the outlet.
