‘Didn't work’: Chris Hemsworth opens up about being turned down for role in a Kevin Costner project
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Chris Hemsworth is lamenting a role in a Kevin Costner directorial that he failed to make his own.
On Thursday, April 11, as the ‘Thor’ actor was present at the CinemaCon, he opened up about the film that he could not bag. He recalled the script to be "abstract and interesting" with "a small story about a man and a woman".
However, the Marvel star lamented that he could not convince Costner for the role as the ‘Yellowstone’ star cast himself in it.
Chris Hemsworth opens up about losing out on role
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight after Paramount's studio presentation at CinemaCon on Thursday, Hemsworth recalled, "There was a movie, a script that I'd read and loved and was like, 'I want to get that,' and then someone said, 'Kevin Costner has that [role].’”
The 40-year-old actor continued, "I'd love [to have] him as a director. I was like, 'Goddamnit!' [I spent] an hour the other day trying to convince him and he was like, 'I'm doing it, kid.' Didn't work. I didn't get the part."
He added that there are “horses involved” and the character is “a horse wrangler” - something that gravitated him toward the role. Moreover, his wife - Elsa Pataky - too encouraged him to take up the role because of the involvement of horses.
"It's better seen in his wheelhouse for sure, as far as the kind of Western environment,” shared the Australian actor and added, “There's horses involved, he's a horse wrangler, and my wife read it and loves horses.”
Hemsworth explained, "We have 10 or 11 horses back home and so she's like, 'You've got to do this.'"
While the identity of the project remains undisclosed, the film with the “abstract and interesting” plot and “a small story” might not be one of the four installments of Costner’s upcoming western epic ‘Horizon’.
The ‘Yellowstone’ star has already filmed the first two installments of the western epic, with the first in the series set to premiere at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival in May.
It will get its theatrical release on June 28, followed by the second film’s release on August 16, per Variety.
Kevin Costner praises Chris Hemsworth
After Hemsworth lamented losing the role last week, the Oscar-winner too opened up about the ‘Avengers’ alum’s interest in his script.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Customer quipped, “It’s a love story, but as long as I’m still young enough to play it, I’ll play it. Chris will have to wait his turn.”
The 69-year-old actor and director, nevertheless, had only good words to say about Hemsworth.
He continued, “[Hemsworth] ’s so handsome, and he’s so good. He’s going to have to go find his [own] love story. [But] I’m glad he likes this one.”
“If I reach a moment where I [don’t] think I could do that, I would [reach out]. He’s certainly one of our great leading men right now,” added the ‘The Highwaymen’ star.
