LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Christina Applegate has spoken publicly for the first time following reports of her recent hospitalization, addressing growing concern about her health. The 'Dead to Me' actress shared an update with fans, offering reassurance while acknowledging her ongoing medical challenges.
Applegate, 54, was diagnosed in 2021 with multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system disrupts nerve signals in the brain and spinal cord.
Christina Applegate says she's 'a strong chick'
Applegate took to Instagram to thank fans for their support, writing, “Thank you for the outpouring of love and well wishes. Health issues are a constant for me, but I'm a strong chick and I'm getting stronger and better every day.”
She added that she is “taking a moment to focus on my health” and will share more in due course. The post included an image of a coffee mug placed on top of her memoir, 'You With the Sad Eyes', indicating she had returned home.
Applegate was reportedly hospitalized in Los Angeles late last month, although it remains unclear whether the stay was directly related to her MS.
A representative previously stated, “I have no comment on whether she is in the hospital or what her medical treatments are,” while noting “she’s had a long history of complicated medical conditions that she has been refreshingly open about, as evidenced in her memoir and on her podcast.”
Following reports of her hospitalization, sources described to Daily Mail the experience as “hellish,” with those close to her expressing concern about her health. One insider said, “Christina is a fighter, but her battle with MS has been treacherous… She has better days and really bad days; she doesn't have great days.”
Christina Applegate details struggles with MS and daily life
Applegate has remained candid about her health journey since revealing her MS diagnosis, frequently discussing her condition through interviews and personal projects. In her memoir, she described experiencing “dangerous” and “scary” weight loss, explaining that a clear-liquid diet due to stomach issues led to her losing more than 50 pounds within seven months.
She has also spoken about the physical toll of the illness, including being confined to bed due to persistent pain. Applegate wrote, “I start vomiting, almost like my body is trying to stop the noise, too, Then I end up in the hospital again. I just want everything to stop. But it won’t stop.”
Despite this, she continues to maintain aspects of her daily routine, particularly spending time with her daughter, Sadie. “I want to take her; it's my favorite thing to do… I tell myself, ‘Just get her there safely and get home so you can get back into bed,’” she said.
Reflecting on her experience, she stated, “My life isn't wrapped up with a bow… People's lives… suck sometimes. So I'm being as honest and raw as I possibly can.” Applegate also co-hosts a podcast called 'MeSsy' with Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who has also been diagnosed with MS.
During a March 2025 episode of the podcast, Applegate confirmed that since her diagnosis, she has “been in the hospital upwards of 30 times.”
