LAS VEGAS, NEVADA: Social media users didn't mince their words unleashing a barrage of criticism toward the Heisman trophy's official X (formerly known as Twitter) account after they made a post remembering and mourning the passing of former NFL star and dual murder suspect OJ Simpson.

Numerous internet users suggested that the accolade has lost its dignity and become a 'joke' for paying tribute to Simpson. A section of users also advocated for the Heisman trophy to take back the honor from Simpson following his death.

Since the news of Simpson's death, the internet has been filled with mixed reactions. Some people mourned his death, while others harbored opposite feelings, similar to his former friend Caitlyn Jenner, who regarded Simpson's death as 'good riddance.'

Heisman trophy trust mourns the loss of OJ Simpson

According to the Daily Mail, the passing of OJ Simpson, at the age of 76, on April 10, 2024, due to prostate cancer, was mourned by the official Heisman Trophy account on X.

Simpson, known for winning the prestigious college football award in 1968 while playing for USC, had a controversial history, being held civilly responsible for the deaths of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman.

Despite Simpson's troubled past, the official Heisman account still paid tribute to him, acknowledging his achievements. They expressed condolences, stating, "The Heisman Trophy Trust mourns the passing of 1968 Heisman Trophy Winner OJ Simpson. We extend our sympathy to his family."

However, many college football fans were displeased with the tribute, considering Simpson's alleged involvement in the murders.

According to USA Today, back in 1994, Simpson's second wife, Brown, tragically lost her life at just 35 years old. Her body was discovered outside her home in Los Angeles, bearing stab wounds.

Simpson faced trial for her murder as well as the murder of her friend, Goldman. Although acquitted in 1995, his reputation suffered greatly, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Following Simpson's death, his family released a statement via his social media account, asking for privacy in the tough time.
