MALIBU, CALIFORNIA: Sophia Hutchins, the longtime manager and close confidant of Caitlyn Jenner, died on Wednesday, July 2 after her ATV plunged 350 feet off a cliff along a mountainous road in Malibu.

Authorities believe Hutchins was speeding when she rear-ended another vehicle and lost control, sending her over the edge. The 29-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving Jenner devastated as she mourns privately at her Malibu home.

Hutchins, a well-known media figure and transgender advocate, shared a deep, non-romantic relationship with Jenner, with the two living and working together for nearly a decade. This has left Jenner, 75, visibly shaken and mourning privately at her secluded Malibu residence.

Speed suspected as Sophia Hutchins dies in Malibu cliff crash after rear-end collision

According to Sergeant Eduardo Saucedo of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Hutchins was driving southbound on a steep stretch of Decker Canyon Road around 11:30 am when she struck the rear of a gray 2016 Mazda 6 occupied by two women.

“It looks like she may have been speeding and rear-ended the other car, that caused her to veer to the right and go off the cliff,” Saucedo told DailyMail.com.

He noted that Hutchins likely attempted to swerve around the car but was going too fast to avoid a collision. The impact caused the ATV to careen off the edge and crash into a ravine.

A search-and-rescue team had to rappel down the cliffside to recover Hutchins’ body, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two occupants of the Mazda, one of them a local realtor, were unharmed and remained on site to cooperate with deputies. Toxicology results from the coroner’s office are pending to determine if drugs or alcohol were factors.

The accident happened less than half a mile from Jenner’s Malibu home. Saucedo confirmed that Jenner attended the crash scene while law enforcement was still present.

In the days following the accident, Jenner told the outlet that she was going through “tough times,” visibly distraught while picking up a drink from a local Starbucks, and later seen accompanying Hutchins' mother in Malibu. On the morning of Saturday, July 4, she was photographed walking alongside Hutchins’ mother, both looking somber and subdued. “I don’t want to talk,” Jenner said when approached about the tragedy.

She spent Independence Day in mourning at her $3.5 million mountaintop residence.

Hutchins, like Jenner, was transgender and often credited the Olympian’s 20/20 interview in 2015 as the pivotal moment that inspired her to transition. The two met in 2016 while Hutchins was studying at Pepperdine University. Shortly thereafter, she began hormone therapy and ultimately moved into Jenner’s Malibu home in 2017, later taking over as her manager.

Their partnership was marked by mutual respect and personal growth, with Hutchins frequently appearing on Jenner’s show 'I Am Cait' and in social media posts with the Kardashian-Jenner family.

Sophia Hutchins’ story beyond the headlines

Hutchins transitioned publicly during her time at Pepperdine, saying the university provided the space to begin living authentically. “Before I transitioned, I felt like, I’m definitely just a girl, but I’m in the wrong body,” she once said. Her candid reflections on gender dysphoria and transitioning helped others in the LGBTQ+ community navigate similar paths.

The businesswoman went on to become a visible public figure, appearing in campaigns for Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS and attending events like the White House Correspondents’ Dinner with Jenner.

Her last Instagram post in April featured a photo of a repaired candelabra, a subtle metaphor that now takes on a haunting resonance.

Hutchins leaves behind a legacy not only as Jenner’s trusted right hand but also as a young woman who lived boldly, advocated fiercely, and made a lasting impact on those around her.
