AUGUSTA, MAINE: Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows is facing an intense backlash from Donald Trump's campaign team after she disqualified the former president from the state's March 2024 primary ballot.

The leading Republican presidential candidate's campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, issued a lengthy official statement lashing out at the Democratic official's ruling on Friday, December 30.

Accusing Bellows of stealing the 2024 presidential election, Cheung stated, "The Maine Secretary of State is a former ACLU attorney, a virulent leftist and a hyper-partisan Biden-supporting Democrat who has decided to interfere in the presidential election on behalf of Crooked Joe Biden."

"We are witnessing, in real-time, the attempted theft of an election and the disenfranchisement of the American voter," he added.

Following the Colorado Supreme Court's December 19 decision to remove Trump from the primary, Bellows on December 29 announced her decision to remove the former president from Maine's primary ballot, citing his alleged involvement in the January 6 Capitol riots.

'A hostile assault on American democracy'

Trump's campaign team's statement blamed not only Bellows but also the Democrats, accusing the latter of "recklessly and unconstitutionally suspending the civil rights of the American voters by attempting to summarily remove President Trump's name from the ballot."

"Make no mistake, these partisan election interference efforts are a hostile assault on American democracy," read Cheung's statement.

"Biden and the Democrats simply do not trust the American voter in a free and fair election and are now relying on the force of government institutions to protect their grip on power."

The campaign spokesperson highlighted that courts in Michigan and Minnesota, along with federal courts in New Hampshire, Arizona, Florida, Rhode Island, West Virginia, and ten other jurisdictions, have dismissed challenges to Trump's candidacy based on the 14th Amendment of the Constitution.

Claiming that "the constitution and American people" are with Trump in the fight as he dominates the polls while Joe Biden's presidency "continues to fail," Cheung declared the campaign's decision to file a legal objection in state court "to prevent this atrocious decision in Maine from taking effect."

Coinciding with the latest obstacle from Maine, the former President got reinstated in the Colorado primary ballot until the SCOTUS's decision on the appeal.

Furthermore, despite political pressure the California secretary of state also decided to keep the leading GOP presidential candidate on the state's ballot

Internet ridicules Trump campaign's statement

For netizens, the campaign spokesperson's statement was nothing but a "childish attack." Hardly taking Cheung's remarks seriously, they compared it to a child venting frustration after getting punished.

One user said, "This isn't helping. It sounds like me when I was 12 venting in my journal about being grounded."

Another user remarked, "So it's not a statement on the ruling, just a petty and childish attack on the Secretary of State. Typical of the Drumpf crowd."

Users also shared memes mocking the Trump's campaign's statement.

One user added, "He has some nerve saying someone is interfering with a presidential election. Trump is oblivious to what he himself actually did."

"Cry more," read another reaction.
