WASHINGTON, DC: David Axelrod has voiced his opinion that Donald Trump remains a "pretty substantial favorite" in the 2024 presidential race, even as excitement builds among Democrats about Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign.

On his podcast 'Hacks on Tap', Democratic strategist Axelrod said, “I still rate him a, you know, pretty substantial favorite in this race just because of the electoral challenges."

David Axelrod doubles down on Joe Biden's withdrawal from 2024 presidential race

In the podcast on Tuesday, July 23, the podcast hosts praised President Joe Biden's decision to end his reelection campaign.

On Sunday, July 21, Biden announced that he was withdrawing from his candidacy and endorsed Harris who has secured enough support from the Democratic Party to challenge Donald Trump.

Following the president's announcement, Axelrod, who has been one of the prominent Democrat members to call on Biden to step aside, remarked that the president's decision was "sad" but "necessary."

Kamala Harris' path to presidential nomination

As Kamala Harris expressed her anticipation for earning the Democratic nomination, David Axelrod emphasized the importance of a fair process than a "coronation."

However, Harris has managed to secure enough delegates to clinch the presidential nomination and has garnered endorsement from high-ranking Democrats. She has also been receiving immense support online and through donations.

Who will be Kamala Harris' running mate?

With the focus now on Kamala Harris, speculation surrounding her potential choice for a running mate has risen.

“It’s the first presidential decision you make, and it’s a signal about how you’re gonna govern and there’s a list of people out there," said Axelrod.

"I honestly think that there are two most serious candidates on it and one is Gov [Josh] Shapiro of Pennsylvania and the other is Mark Kelly the senator from Arizona,” the ex-Obama advisor added.

In one of the first polls conducted following Biden's suspension of his campaign, Harris leads Trump by two points with 44 percent support to Trump's 42 percent, according to The Hill.

Responding to the polls, the Trump campaign suggested Harris might experience a temporary boost in polls in the wake of her being expected to be the Democratic nominee but predicted it would level down eventually.

Internet slams David Axelrod for saying Donald Trump is a 'substantial favorite' in the election

As David Axelrod suggested Donald Trump is a "pretty substantial favorite" in the 2024 race compared to Kamala Harris, netizens mocked the Democratic strategist for his remarks.

One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, "Axe is washed - he's bitter and irrelevant."

"I’m getting tired of Axlerod doing Trump’s bidding for him," a netizen commented while a user tweeted, "Let’s make a deal. When Harris wins, can we just never see or hear from Axelrod again?"

"Dave, get onboard or jump ship," one remarked while another remarked, "Is he on crack or just a secret MAGA?"
