David Foster says 'you can't push them' as he opens up on 3-year-old son Rennie taking a break from drumming

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: David Foster and Katharine McPhee Foster’s three-year-old son is taking a break from drumming.

The toddler Rennie came into the spotlight when a clip of him drumming at one of his father’s shows went viral.

However, the toddler was being unmic’ed and just banging along while Foster’s drummer JR Robinson was actually playing the instrument.

"It was pretty amazing. He's studied our drummer JR Robinson, who's incredible, for the last year and a half and he's figured it out on his own," Foster told People back then.

David Foster opens up on Rennie's drumming break

David gave an update on Rennie, mentioning that the little prodigy was taking a break.

"He's taking a little hiatus. He hasn't really been drumming for the past month or two," the 74-year-old said.

"As a parent, you can't push them. It's like, you want to play the drums, and now what's next? So he's gone off of it a little bit. But he still loves to watch our drummer play and come to rehearsals, and loves being on the road with us," Foster told the outlet.

Foster is a talented songwriter and producer who has 16 Grammys in his bag and has been nominated for 47.

His hits include 'St Elmo's Fire,' 'You're the Inspiration,' and 'The Glory of Love.' Foster has  also produced hits like 'All By Myself.' 'Tell Him,' and 'I Will Always Love You.'

Rennie’s mother McPhee Foster was the runner-up on season 5 of ‘American Idol’ and is also an accomplished singer who has five albums to her name and has been a Broadway mainstay in the show Waitress.
