MADISON, WISCONSIN: Wisconsin's Attorney General Josh Kaul, a Democrat, has filed forgery charges against two lawyers and an ex-aide of former President Donald Trump, accusing them of attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

The charged individuals are Kenneth Chesebro, 62, and Jim Troupis, 70, both attorneys, and Mike Roman, 51, a former staffer on the 2020 Trump campaign. Each faces a felony charge for their alleged roles in what Kaul describes as a “fake elector” scheme. “The criminal complaint in this case alleges that the defendants were part of a conspiracy to present a certificate of purported electoral votes from individuals who were not Wisconsin’s duly appointed electors,” Kaul stated in his announcement of the charges.

The forgery charges are linked to an alleged plot involving 10 Wisconsin Republicans who met in the state Capitol in December 2020. They allegedly signed paperwork falsely claiming to be electors for Trump.

Electors are individuals officially appointed to represent voters in presidential elections, and the winner of the popular vote in each state determines which party’s electors are sent to the Electoral College to certify the election outcome.

Chesebro and Troupis are accused of devising the plan to have the GOP members act as unappointed electors, casting votes for Trump. Roman, on the other hand, allegedly delivered the state’s fake elector paperwork to a Pennsylvania congressman’s staffer, aiming to get it to then-Vice President Mike Pence on January 6, 2021.

These charges represent the first instance of state prosecutors holding individuals accountable for the plot involving the 10 Republicans. Despite increasing pressure, the 10 fake electors themselves have not been charged with any criminal wrongdoing.

The fake elector efforts are also central to a federal indictment against Trump, which accuses him of attempting to overturn the 2020 election results. Additionally, Trump faces charges in Georgia related to the election, with Chesebro and Troupis among the 18 individuals indicted alongside him.

In October, Chesebro pleaded guilty in Atlanta to a felony charge of conspiracy to commit filing false documents after reaching a deal with prosecutors. Roman, meanwhile, pleaded not guilty to racketeering and conspiracy charges connected to a plan to have GOP electors meet and cast Electoral College votes for Trump, despite Biden winning Georgia. Chesebro, Troupis, and the 10 Wisconsin fake electors settled a civil lawsuit brought against them last year over the plot.

The three individuals charged in Wisconsin are scheduled to appear in Dane County Circuit Court on September 19. They each face a felony count that could result in up to six years in prison and fines of up to $10,000, the New York Post reported.

Democrats slammed for felony charges against former Trump aides

The news of the charges against the Trump allies has sparked significant uproar on social media, with many perceiving the charges as politically motivated.

"Isn't it funny how this supposedly happened in 2020 but they are just now filing. They are afraid of Trump's polling number[s]," one posted on X.

"The coordinated Democrat lawfare against anyone involved with President Trump continues," another wrote.

"Disgusting.. This is what Trump means when he says 'They are coming for you too,'" someone else chimed in.

"The Supreme Court needs to step in - with SANCTIONS for the culprits, extensive sanctions. Otherwise, this crap will continue. But, SOMEBODY on the Republican side has to file a request, as the Supreme Court is not gonna take the issue up sua sponte," a comment read.

"On the bright side, Democrats have eliminated their ability to say an election was stolen or rigged in the future- unless they want to end up in a courtroom," another offered.
