WASHINGTON, DC: The official Democrats account on X (formerly Twitter) faced backlash after claiming that Americans dyed potatoes instead of eggs on Easter to save money.

The Democrats made the statement as President Donald Trump's White House welcomed thousands of families to Pennsylvania Avenue as the POTUS hosted the annual White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday, April 21.

The official Democrats account wrote on the social media platform on Monday, "Trump’s White House is using 30,000 real eggs worth over $15,500 for their Easter Egg Roll. Meanwhile, Americans dyed potatoes instead of eggs this Easter to save money."

The post has surpassed 3.5 million views and garnered more than 6,500 comments.

The Democrats account referenced a recent New York Times article that featured a single sentence to support its claim that Americans are dyeing potatoes instead of eggs.

"Videos on how to dye marshmallows, potatoes, and even onions have begun to circulate on social media and news websites," the sentence read.

Furthermore, the article also cited a survey that found 90 percent of customers who celebrate Easter still planned on dyeing eggs.

"A survey of 9,000 PAAS consumers found 90 percent of consumers who celebrate Easter and typically dye eggs planned on doing so despite costs and 54 percent plan to never stop," the article stated.

The Easter Egg Roll is a tradition that started in 1878 with former President Rutherford B Hayes.

However, the egg-rolling parties may have dated back to the time of former President Abraham Lincoln.

As per the White House website, the tradition began in 1878 when "a group of bold children walked up to the White House gate, hoping to be allowed to play egg-rolling games there. President Hayes told his guards to let the children enter, and soon Easter Monday on the White House grounds became an annual tradition."

With time, it has grown into a large event and is now attended by children from all 50 states, and tickets have to be requested via an online lottery for those hoping to attend, according to Whiskey Riff.

Internet rips Democrats for their statement about Americans dyeing potatoes

Many netizens, especially conservatives, slammed Democrats as they claimed in a social media post that Americans dyed potatoes instead of eggs on Easter to save money.

One wrote, "You lie about everything," while another added, "Well, unfortunately that's false. They used the small and medium sized eggs which were donated by egg farmers. These eggs are not typically sold in stores. And no one, I mean no one, is using dyed potatoes. where do you all come up with this nonsense?"

A person stated, "I haven't heard anybody on this planet ever dying potatoes for Easter. And I've been to Ireland," whereas someone else mentioned, "You do realize the price of eggs is down over 50% from March right? You're using old data buddy. Catch up."

"Maybe you guys should hire a PR team that is more in touch with reality.... Why do you guys miss the mark so badly??" another comment read.

"No American dyed potatoes. And at least it’s not a $16,000 'hot dog' party," one more wrote, while another person commented, "But the potatoes identify as eggs so stop misgendering them."
