WASHINGTON, DC: It’s been two tense weeks of what the White House is now calling the “Schumer Shutdown,” and things aren’t looking any better in Washington.

Led by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the Democrats have refused to back President Donald Trump’s push to reopen the government because they reportedly want trillions in new spending, which allegedly includes taxpayer-funded healthcare for undocumented immigrants.

As a result, a federal WIC program that helps women, infants, and children put food on the table is running out of money.

The troops weren’t set to get paid either, but Trump wasn’t about to sit back and let that happen. The commander-in-chief authorized the use of tariff revenue to keep the WIC program alive and ordered that the military’s paychecks go out on time.

Now, the Democrats are reportedly threatening to sue Trump for using his executive authority to feed struggling families and pay the armed forces.

White House fires back

The White House’s official account on X (formerly Twitter) posted, “Democrats now want to block the President from funding our troops and protecting vulnerable Americans with tariff revenue, all while keeping the government shut down to push free healthcare for illegal aliens. Once again, Democrats put AMERICA LAST.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also chimed in.

“So President Trump took action by using tariff revenue to fund the women, infants, and children program and his Commander in Chief authority to ensure our troops get paid. But now the radical Democrats are going to sue to stop the President from paying our troops and protecting vulnerable Americans? They’re despicable and heartless!” she fumed.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson also defended the president’s move during a press conference, saying, “If the Democrats want to go to court and challenge troops being paid, bring it," as quoted by Axios.

The outlet, which is hardly a conservative megaphone, admitted such a lawsuit would be a "massive political headache" for House Democrats. One anonymous Democrat confessed, “The legality is questionable, but politically I hope Democrats don't do it.”

Democrats dig in as Trump keeps the paychecks coming

White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson posted on X, "1. Democrats shut the government down bc they want free health care for illegal aliens 2. Democrats say missed pay for troops won't make them open the govt 3. President Trump finds a way to pay our troops 4. Democrats complain about troops getting paid."

While Trump was finding creative ways to keep Americans afloat, Democrats spent their long weekend away from Washington, doubling down. On Tuesday, Senate Democrats blocked the GOP's eighth attempt to reopen the government.

Even the threat of “mass firings” from the Trump administration and Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought over the weekend didn’t make them reconsider. Schumer’s team is holding the line, no matter the fallout.

There was at least one sigh of relief. As mentioned, Trump ordered the Pentagon to shuffle funds so troops could get their paychecks by October 15. But the next pay date is for Senate staffers on October 20, and the fate of that payout is still unclear.

Trump slams Chuck Schumer as 'weakened politician'

Democrats reportedly want an extension of Obamacare subsidies before open enrollment kicks off on November 1, arguing that premiums for Americans relying on Affordable Care Act tax credits will soar without it.

But Trump isn’t budging. He’s calling it what he sees as another desperate ploy to unravel $1.5 trillion in spending cuts from his "big, beautiful bill." These cuts clawed back funding from outlets like NPR and PBS to redirect taxpayer money elsewhere, including to illegal immigrants.

“I don't want to bore you with the fact that Schumer said 100 times, ‘You should never close our government,’” Trump told reporters. “But Schumer is a weakened politician. I mean, he's going to finish his career as a failed politician, as a failed politician. He's allowed the radical left to take over the Democrat Party.”
