Dick Van Dyke reveals his secret to longevity at 99: 'I’ve always exercised three days a week'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Dick Van Dyke, the beloved 'Mary Poppins' star, shared his secret to staying healthy and active at nearly 100 years old.
Speaking on Ted Danson’s podcast 'Where Everybody Knows Your Name', Van Dyke revealed that his fitness routine and dedication to exercise have been key to his remarkable vitality.
Ted Danson recalls Dick Van Dyke 'dancing' between gym machines
Dick Van Dyke, who turns 100 in December, credited regular workouts and an active lifestyle for keeping him in good health and preventing the physical limitations often associated with aging.
Candidly speaking about his workout habits, Van Dyke said, “Somebody said, ‘To what do you attribute your age and physical condition?’ I’ve always exercised three days a week."
“I’m almost 100. This is insane,” Van Dyke told Danson, according to the New York Post.
"We go to the gym still and I think that’s why I’m not stove up like my equals,” Van Dyke added during the podcast.
Ted Danson, who shared gym sessions with Van Dyke, marveled at his energy and unique style. “I would go to the same gym you did, and if I got there early enough, I would see you literally work out on some weight machine," Danson said.
He said Van Dyke would appear "doing circuit training" and "you would not walk to the next machine, you’d dance."
"You literally danced to the next machine," he said.
Dick Van Dyke remembers 'good' fitness routine
Ted Danson recalled discussing Dick Van Dyke’s post-gym routine which included swimming laps and resting.
“You said that you would go to the gym and work out and then you would go home and swim laps. Then you would get back into bed and take a nap,” Danson remembered.
Van Dyke confirmed with humor during the podcast, “Exactly. Good routine." The actor shared that his current regimen includes stretching, yoga, and using gym equipment.
“I’m doing a lot of stretching and yoga-type things. Sit-ups. And they have machines, something for almost every exercise,” Van Dyke explained.
Van Dyke, an Emmy, Grammy, and Tony winner remains a celebrated figure in the entertainment industry. His achievements include being inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1995 and receiving the SAG Life Achievement Award in 2012.
He has also been honored at the Kennedy Center in 2021 according to The Hollywood Reporter.
