Dodgers star Mookie Betts reveals his ‘body is kind of eating itself’ as unknown disease threatens return

ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA: Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts missed the start of this year’s Dodgers season as he’s still recovering from an unknown disease, which is making it impossible for him to eat any solid food.
The baseball outfielder said that his current weight is down to 157 lbs, a significant decrease from 175 lbs when he joined Dodgers spring training in mid-February, The New York Post reported.
Speaking with SportsNetLA, “My body’s just kind of eating itself. Literally every time I fuel my body, I throw it up, and I don’t know what to do about it.”

Mookie Betts says he’s ‘able to do pretty much everything’ except eating
The 32-year-old athlete shared that the doctors are yet to give a proper diagnosis to him but claimed that he is “afraid to eat.”

Betts’ illness began just two days before his team left for Tokyo. The Mirror US cited him saying, “Two days before Tokyo, two days before Tokyo. Didn't get to play the last game, so, got on the plane. I thought I would at least give myself a couple of days to kind of heal.”
“Then the plane ride was brutal. That was one of the worst plane rides I've ever had. Got there, got one workout in, that was a really bad trip in Tokyo. So I came back, another bad plane ride. There hasn't been anything very encouraging, but it is what it is,” he added.
Though Betts is unable to eat solid food, he can drink some smoothies. He revealed, “I mean, I feel great. Like, my body feels great. I've been able to work out. I've been able to do pretty much everything but eat, which is strange.”
“So the symptoms have kind of gone away, I just have to figure out how to get my stomach to kind of calm down,” he added.
Mookie Betts ‘tired of throwing up’ because of unknown illness

The star player for Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers also mentioned that it’s “just hard to fathom not eating and going to play a game.”
“So it looks like I'm just going to be light for a little bit. Maybe I will play uphill a little bit for the beginning of the season. But no, I just want to play, man. I'm tired of sitting, tired of throwing up, tired of doing all this. I really just want to play,” Betts added.

Meanwhile, people online have expressed their support for Betts and wished him well as he deals with an unknown disease.
A user posted on X, “Get well soon Mookie we need you.”
Another commented, “These symptoms require much more aggressive diagnostics. That much weight loss and the inability to hold down food is indicative of serious illness. Many possibilities here, but Mook and Management needs to step up the game. LA has some of the best Docs around.”
