Elon Musk launches his own ‘American Party’ after former pal Trump signs ‘big, beautiful bill’ into law

WASHINGTON, DC: Amid his messy fallout with President Donald Trump, Elon Musk has decided to break the US’ long-standing two-party system.
The 54-year-old Tesla boss took to his X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, July 5, to announce the launch of his own political party named "American Party," calling it his bold stance against what he described as a corrupt political establishment that no longer represents the American people.

Musk’s announcement came after Congress passed Trump’s flagship ‘big, beautiful bill’, which the presdient signed into law on Independence Day. The former DOGE head had, time and again, slammed the spending bill as wasteful.

Elon Musk says his political party will give Americans their freedom back
The tech mogul’s announcement of launching a new political party came just a day after he shared a poll on X with the message, "Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uni-party) system! Should we create the America Party?"

Should we create the America Party?
More than 1.2 million people voted in the poll, with 65.4% of them favoring Musk launching a new party. Reflecting on the result, the Starklink CEO announced the launch of his new political party in a follow-up post.
"By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!" he wrote, adding, "When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom."

On Saturday, Musk also reshared a meme showing a two-headed snake with the comment, "End the Uniparty." Musk simply replied with, "Yes."
However, Musk had not filed a registration for the new party as of Saturday evening, though he stated in another post that the "America Party" would participate in elections "next year."
A source familiar with the discussion told The New York Times that Musk has recently spoken with friends about his plan to form a political party and what it would take to accomplish it.
According to the tipster, the discussions have been more intellectual than pragmatic.
Elon Musk had threatened to launch his political party if Congress passed the 'big, beautiful bill'
Elon Musk’s announcement came a few days after he threatened to form and fund the "America Party" to oust GOP lawmakers if the Republican-controlled Congress passed Donald Trump's "big, beautiful bill.”
“If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day. Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE,” he wrote on X on June 30.

Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE.
Musk previously floated the idea of forming a third party earlier in the month. On June 5, the billionaire posted a poll on X, posing the question, "Is it time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle?"
The new political party could be the result of his dramatic fallout with Trump over the president’s much-hyped "big beautiful bill," which ends tax breaks for electric vehicles — something that has been the Tesla CEO's passion project.
Musk also argued that the bill undercut DOGE's cost-cutting efforts by increasing the deficit.

The rift deepened after the president rescinded his nomination offer to Musk ally Jared Isaacman for NASA administrator, and the tech mogul alleged that Trump’s name popped up in documents linked to Jeffrey Epstein.
Musk’s allegations were followed by Trump floating the idea of deporting his former buddy and threatening to cut government subsidies given to the tech entrepreneur's companies.
