Elon Musk’s X to move out of San Francisco but city officials remain unperturbed by decision
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA: San Francisco officials have responded to the announcement that the tech giant X/Twitter is relocating its headquarters from the city, a decision made under the ownership of Elon Musk.
For the past ten years, the company had made the Bay Area its home, nestled in San Francisco's downtown district, and it had become a symbol of the city's vibrant tech startup culture.
Musk took over Twitter in late 2022 and renamed it X.
How did San Francisco officials react to Elon Musk relocating X headquarters?
Billionaire Elon Musk intends to relocate the remaining San Francisco-based employees to his offices in Palo Alto and San Jose, following several disputes and grievances regarding the city's business climate and political landscape.
Meanwhile, the company's new headquarters will be situated in Texas, the hub of Musk's aerospace and electric car ventures. However, The New York Times reports that city officials are not saddened by X's departure, owing to the changes within the company over the past few years.
“I share the perspective that most San Franciscans have, which is good riddance,” stated City Attorney David Chiu. He had previously backed the tax incentive in 2012 that enticed X/Twitter to establish its headquarters in the heart of the city.
Additionally, the city's chief economist, Ted Egan, stated that the departure of company X from the city would have a minimal impact due to the company's significant downsizing.
"In many respects, they were already gone," he remarked. The Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, along with Musk's acquisition of the company and the ensuing layoffs, had left the headquarters nearly deserted.
Elon Musk announces decision to move X headquarters to Texas
According to The New York Times, Elon Musk, who has had disputes with state regulators over pandemic stay-at-home orders and has become more involved in right-wing politics, recently suggested that he is becoming disenchanted with San Francisco.
In July, he shared online that he was stuck in the company's garage “because a gang was doing drugs in the street and wouldn’t move!”
Last month, Musk announced his intention to relocate X's headquarters to Austin, Texas, following the passage of a California law prohibiting school districts from mandating that teachers inform parents of their children's gender identity changes.
Musk’s estranged trans daughter Vivian, 20, had spoke out about her childhood in a recent interview, calling her father “uncaring and narcissistic”.
Additionally, Musk attributed the move to San Francisco's gross receipts tax, which imposes taxes on local businesses for transactions conducted beyond the city's boundaries.
