Elton John contemplates his mortality while husband David Furnish wants singer ‘to be around forever’
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Elton John’s new documentary 'Elton John: Never Too Late', not only offers a raw and intimate look into the legendary singer's life but also his poignant fears.
Elton’s husband, David Furnish, who co-directed the film, has opened up about the emotional toll it took on him, revealing a deeply personal struggle with anxiety as he watched the film’s candid moments.
David Furnish wants Elton John to be around 'forever'
In a heart-wrenching scene, Elton John, 77, reflected on a reality that many try to ignore: mortality. As the singer contemplates not being present for his sons’ major milestones, it’s clear how this thought weighs heavily on him.
His sons, Zachary, 13, and Elijah, 11, have been described by John as being "racked with worry" about their father’s future.
“They think about my mortality,” John admits.
“They worry about my mortality. Not so much David, but me. (They) love their daddy, so they want me to be around forever.”
David Furnish, 61, who has been married to John since 2014, when same-sex marriage was legalized in the UK, expressed that watching the documentary filled him with "a lot of anxiety", especially when John talks about not being around all the time.
He shared, "I don't think it's a conversation you want to have with your children. I don't want to plant that seed in their mind."
For Furnish, the thought of losing Elton is unbearable. “Look, I want him to be around forever,” he said. “And both of us, in the 30 years we've been together, we're only just at this moment that we've only ever dreamed of.”
Elton John stops touring to spend time with family
The film also touches on Elton John's decision to retire from touring after his Farewell Yellow Brick Road concerts, a choice that was driven not by sudden realization but by a desire to cherish family moments.
"Elton was always doing 90, 100 shows a year, working constantly,” David Furnish explained.
“And then we had our sons, and then that whole reality takes place," he added.
Reportedly, John’s health has been a concern recently, with fans noticing his frail appearance during a Glastonbury festival performance and learning of a severe eye infection that had left him partially blind.
Despite these challenges, John remains hopeful and determined to make the most of his time with his family.
“I want to see them have children and get married,” he reflected.
“I don’t think I’m going to be around for that. Who knows? You never know.”
As Radar Online reported, John’s journey from a life of relentless touring to finding peace at home has been both a transition and a testament to his enduring spirit.
“Time together is so wonderful and so precious,” John concluded.
