Ex-Clinton aide Paul Begala trolled for saying 'walls are closing in' on Joe Biden's reelection campaign
WASHINGTON, DC: Political analyst and former Bill Clinton strategist Paul Begala predicted on Thursday, July 18, that President Joe Biden's reelection campaign is almost certainly over.
"I've been talking to a lot of people, a lot of members in the Senate and House, major donors, activists, party chairs and I got to tell you, I think I‘ve come across one who is still ridin’ for Biden," Begala said candidly on CNN. "So the walls are closing in," he added.
Joe Biden has resisted calls from a growing faction in his party to step down from the race
Biden has been defying calls to withdraw from the race for weeks coming from an increasingly vocal segment of his party. This week's new reports reveal that prominent Democratic leaders are now holding private meetings with the president to press for his resignation, out of concern that he will lose to his Republican opponent, former president Donald Trump.
Nancy Pelosi has made the same argument in private calls to Joe Biden
CNN reported that Biden's longtime ally Nancy Pelosi, the former speaker of the House, has brought up this point in private conversations with the president. According to a report from ABC News' chief Washington correspondent Jonathan Karl, Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer has also "forcefully" argued to Biden that it would be best if he "bowed out of the race."
Paul Begala stressed that Joe Biden 'has to' listen to his party's advice
Begala emphasized that Biden "has to" listen to this counsel because all indications point to a serious threat to his candidacy for president.
"It's like that Carrie Underwood song, ‘Jesus, take the wheel,’ I’ve been saying, ‘Nancy, take the wheel,’" he joked. "It comes down to money, maps and polls. The money has dried up," he continued. "I can tell you that I raised money for a lot of super PACs. It has dried up. Donors are on strike, to the tune of, somebody reported, $90 million? It's more like $300 million that people are sitting on saying they're not going to give," Begala further said.
Major liberal donors withdraw their financial support to the Democrats
Following his dismal debate performance in June, the president's fundraising is collapsing as significant liberal donors have stopped contributing to the party. Celebrity supporters of the president have also reportedly threatened to stop donating to the Democratic Party as long as Biden is on the ticket, according to a Variety story published last month.
Joe Biden is also losing support from Democratic strongholds
Begala cautioned that voters in swing states and Democratic strongholds are also beginning to turn against Biden.
"The maps are deteriorating so fast that the lieutenant governor of New York says it's now a swing-state. People talk about losing New Jersey. Minnesota and the polling is terrible, especially in the swing states. So you can‘t fight money maps and polls in this business," he continued, as per Fox News.
Joe Biden campaign has backed the president
The Biden campaign told the media on Thursday morning, July 18, that the senator has no plans to withdraw from the race, despite growing pressure to do so.
"Our campaign is not working through any scenarios where President Joe Biden is not at the top of the ticket. He is and will be the Democratic nominee," Biden principal deputy campaign manager Quentin Fulks said.
Internet calls Paul Begala a 'yelling Biden'
Netizens mocked Begala and the US president as the former expressed concern that Biden's re-election campaign may well be over. Besides mounting pressure from the political pundits, the 81-year-old being tested positive for Covid didn't help his present situation either.
One X user tweeted, "A yelling Biden. Just keep on yelling." Another added, "If the walls are closing in, is there a political locksmith on call?" One user remarked, "If Biden doesn't step aside early enough, his replacement will get trashed by Donald Trump," while someone else penned, "They are eating their own Democrats always do."
