Claim: Elon Musk donated $800K to help storm victims build their homes

In one of the posts dated March 30, a Facebook user by the name Sense posted an article with the caption, "Elon Musk Donates $800,000 to Help Residents Repair Homes After Storms, Supporting Community Recovery."

Attached to the post was a link to an article on a WordPress blog simply named "My WordPress Blog."

Similar posts were also shared on Facebook by other users, leading to similar articles enumerating Musk’s generosity in helping storm-affected victims rebuild their homes.

The posts came at a time when the Midwest and South were hit by tornadoes and violent winds in early April. Naturally, the rumors of the grand deed garnered traction on the internet, with more than 1K Facebook users even liking the post made by Sense.

Some of the users even praised the SpaceX founder for his purported help, as they wrote, “Elon is a special helpful man! Thanks for all your FREE good work!”

Someone else noted, “Elon just keeps on giving. This man is unbelievable. God has to have his hands on him.”

Another wrote, "He’s a good man Thank you Elon."

Fact Check: Elon Musk did not make a recent donation of $800K

Since the internet is loaded with information, it's imperative to check the veracity of the claims made on social media, especially about important individuals such as Elon Musk.

Fact-checking website Snopes has found that the X owner has not donated $800K in the recent past.

Upon further examination, the outlet revealed that there is no documentation of Musk donating the specific amount in the recent past. Moreover, no traditional outlet also reported on the same.

Careful searches on X, Google, Bing, Yahoo! also did not give credible results, the outlet said.

While most of the articles that are linked with the plethora of Facebook posts open to similar articles, they displayed signs of being generated by artificial intelligence (AI), Snopes noted..

Additionally, the image used by Senses as the cover image of their post also appears to have been generated by AI, as Musk appears to have six fingers in the image.

That being said, while the recent post lacks veracity of Musk donating $800K in the past, the father-of-14 has indeed donated more than that.

Back in October 2024, the Musk Foundation donated $2.4 million—triple of what is claimed in the Sense post—to the New Orleans-based nonprofit disaster recovery organization SBP. The donation was made to help the victims affected by Hurricane Helene.

SpaceX also reportedly helped restore the internet connection in Tonga after the island was hit by a volcanic eruption and a tsunami in January 2022, as reported by AP.
