Fact Check: Did JD Vance say independent Canada needs its own flag, currency, and anthem?
WASHINGTON, DC: A comment attributed to Vice President JD Vance has been widely shared on social media, claiming that Vance stated that an independent Canada would require its own currency, flag, and anthem. The claim has been linked to political discussions involving the relationship between the US and Canada. Let us fact-check the claim.
Claim: JD Vance said Canada would need its own flag, anthem, and currency
Based on the claim that began circulating this month on social media, Vance allegedly said, "If Canada really is as independent from the US as they claim, they'd have their own currency. And an anthem. And flag."
The purported remark spread online after President Donald Trump criticized Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
The claim has spread on social media platforms including Facebook, X, and Bluesky.
One Facebook user wrote, “To underline Trump's brilliant and rambling display of ignorance on the world stage at Davos, and not to be outdone by his beloved leader, JD Vance has excelled with his latest display of brilliance.
JD Vance said recently, "If Canada really is as independent from the US as they claim, they'd have their own currency. And anthem. And flag."
These are the 'leaders' of the modern world? Well, they may be leaders of something, but one can't help wondering who let them off their leash.”
Fact Check: The quote is a satire
Vance, however, did not make this statement. The quote was made up and first appeared on a Threads account that labelled its content as satire. The claim, therefore, originated as a satire.
The quote was posted by the account, @theoutandabouter, on January 22. The account's bio read, "Satire page that became redundant due to *gestures expansively. Now a full-time expansive gesturing page."
The Google search for the keywords also did not produce any appropriate results. It would have been widely covered by news media outlets if the quote were true.
Donald Trump's dispute with Mark Carney
Following Carney’s remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos criticizing the use of economic power and tariffs by dominant nations, without naming the US, Trump withdrew Canada’s invitation to join his newly launched Board of Peace, escalating a public dispute with Carney.
Trump announced the decision in a post addressed directly to Carney, writing: “Please let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada’s joining, what will be, the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled, at any time.”
