Fact Check: Did Nancy Pelosi make $54 million after getting advanced word of Iran ceasefire?
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA: Following the ceasefire ending the weeks-long conflict with Iran, a rumor has been circulating on social media platforms claiming that the Democratic Representative Nancy Pelosi was briefed about the upcoming ceasefire and oil price drop, thereby making millions of dollars in a single trading day. Let us fact-check the viral claim.
Claim: Nancy Pelosi made $54 millions after getting advanced word of Iran ceasefire
The claim surfaced as an X post stating, “Breaking: Nancy Pelosi made $54 million on #Iran ceasefire. Pelosi received a Top Secret briefing about the upcoming ceasefire and immediately shorted oil futures. She netted a cool $54 million in one trading day.”
The post has garnered more than a hundred thousand views, while thousands liked it.
Those commenting under the post are accusing Pelosi of insider trading and calling for legal actions against her, indicating that most believe the claim to be true.
Fact Check: False, no evidence supports the claim
The claim, however, is not true, as there are no credible reports supporting the claim. A Google search for relevant keywords yielded no relevant results by any prominent news media outlets reporting on the claim.
A fact by Grok also confirmed this, stating, “This claim is not true. No credible news outlets, financial disclosures, or official reports link Nancy Pelosi (or her husband) to shorting oil futures for a $54M profit on the Iran ceasefire.”
“Oil prices did plunge after the April 7-8 announcement, and large bearish bets (~$580M-$950M) were reported hours before—, but those remain anonymous and unconnected to her. Pelosi's latest filings show stock trades (e.g., tech/AI), not futures. This seems to be unverified social media speculation.”
Pete Hegseth announces a ceasefire
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Wednesday, April 8, said the United States will ensure Iran complies with a newly established ceasefire, emphasizing that US forces remain prepared for further action if necessary.
His remarks follow a major military campaign referred to as 'Operation Epic Fury,' which targeted key Iranian capabilities.
Senior military officials described the operation as extensive and decisive. The comments come amid ongoing tensions and efforts to transition from active conflict to negotiations.
Hegseth described the outcome of recent military operations as decisive, stating, “Iran begged for this ceasefire, and we all know it... Operation Epic Fury was a historic and overwhelming victory on the battlefield.”
He said the campaign significantly weakened Iran’s military infrastructure.
