BRENTWOOD, LOS ANGELES: A viral claim circulating online alleged that Nick Reiner, the son of Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner, was undergoing a gender transition.

The claim spread on social media following reports of Nick’s alleged involvement in his parents’ deaths and after authorities confirmed his arrest on related charges.

But how much of this claim is actually true?

Claim: Nick Reiner was undergoing gender transition during parents’ deaths

In mid-December 2025, the claim spread primarily on Facebook.

Users alleged that the 32-year-old had recently begun transitioning into a woman and was being given hormones with his parents’ full-throated support and enablement of what they described as his body dysphoria.

A Facebook post titled "Rob Reiner's Son Nick's Horrific Parent Murders Expose Radical Left's Deadly Trans Agenda and Mental Health Mayhem" made the same allegation. Another post repeating the claim warned, "Should never have messed with the children. You are about to hear about, and see some bad shit."

One user on X shared a post claiming, "Reports suggest Reiner's son Nick was struggling with d*ug addiction, while his parents encouraged him to transition. Another sad case of hormone therapy d*ugs, addiction, and mental illness turned deadly. Trans hormone d*ug violence is a serious problem."

Fact Check: False, viral claim labeled as satire

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed Nick’s arrest during a news conference on the morning of Monday, December 15, which was broadcast on C-SPAN, and made no mention of any gender transition. No evidence supported the claim that Nick had recently begun a gender transition.

Instead, the rumor appeared to have originated as satirical content designed to drive engagement on social media.

The Facebook account that appeared to have started the story belonged to self-described comedian Jonathan Gregory, who also claimed to be a "Digital Content Creator for the Trump Administration" and employed by the conservative media outlet Newsmax.

Gregory’s lengthy post included a byline suggesting it was an official Newsmax publication, but a search of the Newsmax website found no bylines attributed to him. Newsmax’s coverage of the Reiners’ deaths was credited to "Newsmax Wire," with contributions from The Associated Press.

In addition to his work in Hollywood, Rob Reiner was a well-known advocate for Democratic causes, notably supporting the 2010 overturning of California’s Prop 8, which had banned same-sex marriage.
