Fact Check: Did Trump predict an attack on Iran's Kharg Island in 1988?
WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump on Friday, March 13, said the United States carried out strikes against "every military target" on Iran's Kharg Island export hub. The POTUS mentioned that the US Central Command (CENTCOM)-led attack was meant to send a warning rather than weaken Iran’s energy exports.
Following this, a rumor circulated online claiming that Trump predicted an attack on Kharg Island way back in 1988. But what's the truth behind this? Let us find out below.
Claim: Trump predicted an attack on Kharg Island way back in 1988
Trump took to his Truth Social on Friday and wrote, "Moments ago, at my direction, the United States Central Command executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East, and totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran’s crown jewel, Kharg Island."
The POTUS further mentioned that Iran lacks the capability to defend itself against US military action. He wrote, "During my First Term, and currently, I rebuilt our Military into the Most Lethal, Powerful, and Effective Force, by far, anywhere in the World."
Trump also stated, "Iran has NO ability to defend anything that we want to attack — There is nothing they can do about it!" and added, "Iran will NEVER have a nuclear weapon, nor will it have the ability to threaten the United States of America, the Middle East or, for that matter, the World!"
Concluding his post, Trump wrote, "Iran’s Military, and all others involved with this Terrorist Regime, would be wise to lay down their arms, and save what’s left of their country, which isn’t much! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP."
Following his post, social media posts claimed Trump had predicted the attack in 1988. An X user wrote, "President Trump explained when and how he would hit Kharg Island in 1988. In 2026, 47 hit Kharg."
Similarly, another X post claimed, "This is insane… Trump said he’d do this in 1988. Word for word. 'I’d do a number on Kharg Island'."
Fact Check: False, Trump just shared his opinion back in 1988
The claims made in the viral social media posts are false, as Donald Trump did not predict an attack on Kharg Island in 1988.
The POTUS did not foresee or forecast any future attack on the island. During a 1988 interview with The Guardian, he advocated for the US to launch a military strike or seize Kharg Island in response to any Iranian aggression against American personnel or ships.
He said during the interview, "I’d be harsh on Iran. They’ve been beating us psychologically, making us look like a bunch of fools. One bullet shot at one of our men or ships, and I’d do a number on Kharg Island. I’d go in and take it."
He made the statement during the Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988), where Iran was attacking shipping in the Persian Gulf. Kharg Island was Iran's primary oil export terminal, handling more than 90% of its crude exports.
Trump merely expressed a hawkish, retaliatory policy view as a US citizen/businessman, and did not predict events that would happen decades later. The quote resurfaced repeatedly in 2026 amid the US-Iran conflict, where Kharg Island became a focal point of discussion and actual strikes.
