WASHINGTON, DC: A viral social media post has claimed that President Donald Trump proposed sweeping new rules to strip members of Congress of several long-standing benefits and privileges. The claim has gained traction across Facebook and X, prompting questions about whether the president introduced such a proposal.

The posts list a series of measures, including eliminating congressional pensions, requiring lawmakers to rely on Social Security and Medicare, ending special healthcare benefits, and preventing Congress from voting itself pay raises. However, a review of available evidence shows the claim is not authentic.

Claim: Donald Trump proposed new rules limiting Congress members' privileges

According to the viral claim, Trump introduced a proposal to limit the privileges of Congress members by removing pensions and requiring lawmakers to participate in the same government-run programs many Americans use, including Medicare for health insurance and Social Security for retirement benefits.

The claim has been widely shared on Facebook and has also circulated on X, where it has amassed hundreds of thousands of views.

One version of the Facebook post states that members of Congress should receive salaries only while serving in office and should not receive pensions or post-office benefits. It also claims lawmakers would have to fund their own retirement plans through the same Social Security system as other Americans.

The post further alleges that Congress would no longer be able to vote itself pay raises. Instead, any salary increases would be tied to Social Security's cost-of-living adjustment and reduced by 1% whenever the federal budget runs a deficit.

Additionally, the message claims lawmakers would be required to use the same healthcare system as the general public, follow the same laws they impose on Americans, including insider trading rules, and lose all special contracts and benefits for current and former members.

The post concludes by arguing that serving in Congress should be viewed as an honor and privilege rather than a lifelong career.

Fact Check: No evidence shows Donald Trump proposed the alleged congressional rules

The claim is false. The widely shared post is a recycled copypasta, or copy-and-paste internet hoax, that has circulated online in various forms for years.

The viral posts cite Fox News as their source, but the network has not published any report about the so-called "Trump Rules" as of this writing.

A broader Google search also does not produce any credible news reports confirming that Trump proposed such legislation or executive action.

There is likewise no record of the proposal on Trump's official social media accounts or in news releases published by the White House.

Because there is no credible evidence that Trump introduced these measures, the claim that he proposed new rules restricting Congress members' privileges is rated false.
