The claim circulated across the social media platform Facebook, where a user wrote, "Walz's Downfall: Dropping Out of Governor Race as Wife Leaves Him Amid Fraud Scandal By Jonathan Gregory, St. Paul, MN - January 5, 2026. 'At the heart of Walz's impending exit is a crumbling personal life, with his wife, Gwen Walz, reportedly planning to leave him after discovering hidden assets amassed through the alleged fraud'." 

The post further read, "Overwhelmed by the revelations, Gwen, a respected educator and historian, is said to be devastated not just by the financial treachery against the state and nation, but by the profound personal betrayal of her husband conducting these dealings behind her back. Insiders claim she stumbled upon evidence of the ill-gotten gains while reviewing family finances, leading to an irreparable rift in their marriage."

Similarly, another Facebook post read, "Hearing from multiple sources within Walz administration that Tim Walz’s wife Gwen, is filing for divorce due to the serious fraud allegations. Walz’s net worth has risen 300% since taking office." 

Moreover, the post also surfaced across X. A user wrote, "Gwen Walz is rumored to be filing for divorce from Tim Walz. This is likely a strategy to protect assets before seizure due to fraud."

Another X user mentioned, "TURN THE PAGE. Gwen Walz is in the process of filing for DIVORCE from the now Governor Tim Walz."

Fact check: False, no credible evidence to back the claim

The claims made in the online rumors are false, as there is no credible evidence to prove that Gwen Walz is filing for divorce or planning to leave Tim Walz following any fraud-related discoveries or 'hidden assets'.

Moreover, reputable media outlets covered Tim Walz's January 5 announcement that he would not seek reelection and mentioned that Gwen Walz attended or appeared emotional at the related news conference. 

However, none reported any marital issues, divorce filings, or personal betrayal tied to fraud.

A search on search engines, such as Google and Bing, with keywords 'Gwen Walz filing for divorce' led to only social media posts, unverified Facebook shares, and low-credibility viral claims, but no credible news report. 

Furthermore, the Facebook post quoting the article by 'Jonathan Gregory' from St. Paul, MN - January 5, 2026, does not appear in legitimate news archives or publications.

The claim that Tim Walz's net worth rising 300% since taking office is also false based on available financial disclosures. No credible sources reported a 300% increase tied to his governorship.
