Fact Check: Was Nancy Pelosi subpoenaed by DOJ in a criminal case?
WASHINGTON, DC: A rumor has been circulating on social media platforms claiming that Democratic Representative Nancy Pelosi was subpoenaed by the Department of Justice in a criminal case in California, sparking speculations and criticisms among online users. Let us analyse the authenticity of the viral claim and fact-check the rumor.
Claim: Nancy Pelosi was subpoenaed by DOJ
The viral claim appeared on a post on X, which states that Nancy Pelosi may face charges, including seditious conspiracy, related to the January 6 attack on the United States Capitol and the January 6 Committee.
The claims also mention allegations of insider trading, racketeering, money laundering, and bribery connected to her husband’s investments and her son’s business dealings in China and Ukraine.
Additionally, the claims outline an alleged influence-peddling scheme in which the Congresswoman is accused of misusing her role as Speaker of the House for personal financial gain.
The claim was accompanied by a video that appeared on Fox News, which shows a House clerk reading on behalf of Pelosi, “This is to notify you formally pursuant to Rule 8 of the Rules of the House of Representatives, that I, the honorable Nancy Pelosi, Speaker Emerita and US representative for the 11th congressional district of California..."
"...have been served with third-party subpoenas from the prosecution and the defendant to produce documents in a criminal case in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California."
"After consultation with the Office of General Counsel, I have determined that compliance with the subpoenas is consistent with the privileges and of the House to the extent it requires production of non-privileged information. The responses to the subpoenas will be identical.”
Fact Check: Claim traces back to 2023, not new developments
However, there is no evidence that Pelosi has been subpoenaed by the Justice Department in any criminal case in recent times.
Moreover, the news and the video are from November 2023 and have now resurfaced. The video shows Pelosi informing the House of Representatives that she was served a subpoena "to produce documents in a criminal case" in California.
Pelosi's statement regarding the subpoena was read by the House Clerk and states the standard when a member is issued a subpoena in a civil or criminal matter.
At the time, a source familiar with the situation told Fox News Digital the subpoena was related to the trial of Paul Pelosi's alleged assailant in a violent home invasion in 2022.
