FBI stops Eric Swalwell at airport, takes electronics as federal investigation escalates
WASHINGTON,DC: Eric Swalwell’s already turbulent political life took another dramatic turn when FBI agents reportedly stopped the former congressman at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday, August 15 and seized electronic devices from him.
The episode was followed by a search of his Washington, DC residence the next day.
Swalwell was not arrested or detained, but the actions point to an active federal investigation involving allegations of misconduct and come as the former lawmaker faces renewed scrutiny over several controversies that have followed him since leaving Congress.

FBI seizes devices from Swalwell
According to a report published by Fox News on August 20, agents took possession of multiple electronic devices belonging to Swalwell, including at least one cellphone.
The precise reason investigators sought the devices has not been publicly detailed beyond their reported connection to a federal investigation into allegations of misconduct.
Swalwell was allowed to leave and was not arrested or formally detained during the airport encounter.
The following day, however, federal investigators reportedly searched his home in Washington, DC, adding a second significant step to the investigation within a matter of hours.
No criminal charges stemming from the reported search have been announced.
The investigation comes against the backdrop of allegations made by multiple women against Swalwell.
At least five women, including a former staff member, have accused him of misconduct.
The airport episode also arrives at a moment when Swalwell is facing fresh attention over a very different controversy from his time in Congress.
Earlier this week, the White House released previously classified records concerning Swalwell’s relationship with Christine 'Fang Fang', a Chinese national who had come under scrutiny from US authorities over suspected links to Chinese intelligence.
The documents contain details from interviews Swalwell gave FBI investigators after his relationship with Fang became a subject of concern.
According to the records, Swalwell acknowledged having a physical relationship with Fang on several occasions.
Eric Swalwell maintains innocence
When he left Congress in April, Swalwell said he intended to fight what he called serious false accusations, while also acknowledging that he had made mistakes for which he needed to accept responsibility.
His departure also ended a 13-year congressional career and came as his political future was already becoming increasingly uncertain.
He subsequently abandoned his campaign for governor of California.
The FBI has not publicly explained what information it is seeking through the electronics or what investigators were looking for during the reported search of his home.
That leaves the significance of the latest developments unclear.
