INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA: The Indiana Fever’s hard-fought 88-71 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday night was overshadowed by a string of escalating altercations that culminated in multiple ejections,

What began as standard physical play quickly escalated into a series of aggressive confrontations, technical fouls, and ejections, prompting sharp postgame criticism from Fever head coach Stephanie White, reports Fox News.

The spark came in the third quarter when a physical encounter between Indiana rookie Caitlin Clark and Sun guard Jacy Sheldon escalated after Sheldon appeared to poke Clark in the eye.

The moment led to a wider scuffle that saw Clark shoved to the floor by Marina Mabrey. While Sheldon’s foul was upgraded to a flagrant, officials controversially handed Clark a technical foul alongside Mabrey and Sun veteran Tina Charles.

The drama didn’t end there. Shortly after, Fever guard Sophie Cunningham delivered a hard foul on Sheldon, which ignited further pushing along the baseline. The resulting confrontation led to the ejections of Cunningham, Sheldon, and Lindsay Allen. By the time the final whistle blew, the contest had taken on more of a boxing match than a basketball game.

Speaking to reporters postgame, White didn’t hold back. Frustrated with how the situation unfolded and how Clark, in particular, was handled, she squarely blamed the officials for losing control of the game early and allowing tensions to fester.

“I think it was pretty obvious that stuff was brewing,” White told Indy Star. “When officials don’t get control of the ball game, when they allow that stuff to happen … it’s been happening all season long, all season long. It’s not just this game.”

She added, “This is what happens. You’ve got competitive women who are the best in the world at what they do and when you allow them to play physical, and you allow these things to happen, they’re gonna compete, and they’re gonna have their teammates’ backs. It’s exactly what you would expect out of fierce competition.”

She criticized the technical foul assessed to Clark, saying she received no explanation and that the officiating crew should have taken steps earlier to de-escalate. “I started talking to officials in the first quarter. You knew this was going to happen,” she said. “They gotta get control of it. They’ve got to be better.”

Crew chief Ashley Gross later defended the decision, saying, “After the foul by Sheldon, Clark reacted in an unsportsmanlike manner.”

But White wasn’t convinced. She stressed that as the league progresses with quicker, stronger, and more athletic players, officiating must also advance to avoid compromising the game's integrity.

“The game has changed so much. Players are faster, they’re better, they’re bigger, they’re stronger, they’re as good as they’ve ever been, as athletic as they’ve ever been. The game is fast now. Things are happening quickly. Everyone is getting better, except the officials. So we’ve got to find a way to remedy it,” White said. “We’ve heard every coach talk about it. I don’t know what the answer is.”
