WASHINGTON, DC: Former national security adviser John Bolton suggested distracting former President Donald Trump could stop him from withdrawing the United States from NATO if he wins the November election, HuffPost reported.

"The remedy I would propose to anybody who doesn't want us to withdraw from NATO is find a way to distract his attention," the former Trump aide said in a recent interview with the MeidasTouch Network's co-founder Ben Meiselas.

"And since he has a short attention span, that can work at least for a while, until it pops back into his head," he added.

During his campaign, the ex-president repeatedly warned NATO allies who have failed to pay their dues, threatening to abandon them in the wake of a Russian attack, even suggesting to "encourage" such an attack.

John Bolton says Trump would follow up on unfulfilled promises

Further into the interview, Bolton painted a picture of what a second Trump term would look like if he emerged as the winner in November, claiming he would particularly focus on the things he was unable to fulfill during the first term in office.

"A lot of things he talked about in the first term, maybe made some tentative steps toward but didn't actually carry through on, we'll see again in a second term," he said, adding the presumptive GOP nominee would cause "irreparable" damage to the nation if reelected.

Bolton, who has refused to endorse Trump, further warned that his second White House term would be a retribution presidency in light of his frequent remarks on the campaign trail.

"Trump himself says quite frequently on the campaign trail that he's going to exact retribution against people who he ran afoul of in the first term or after he left office. Now he casts in the guise of saying he's protecting his supporters, that he's going to get retribution on their behalf. But make no mistake about it. It will be a retribution presidency on behalf of Trump," he cautioned, as per The Hill.

Bolton, who has turned into a Trump critic, predicted in a recent interview with French Daily newspaper Le Figaro, "It is very likely that Trump will leave NATO if he is reelected." In another warning, he said Trump wanted Americans to treat him like North Koreans treat their dictator, Kim Jong Un.

Internet offers alternatives

Responding to Bolton's suggestion, netizens jumped in with their own alternative methods to prevent Trump's NATO withdrawal. When some viewed the matter through a funny lens, others took it seriously, proposing he should never be reelected.

One user wrote, "The easiest way to get Trump on your side is simply to flatter him with empty platitudes. Actions don't even need to be consistent with the platitudes. Just saying them is enough."

"Just change the name into North Atlantic Trump Organisation, and hundreds of billions will be funneled in," another person quipped.

A third user added, "Bolton is suggesting we’d need to micro manage a President on a daily basis? No thanks. Let’s re-elect the one who doesn’t need to be babysat." Meanwhile, a fourth response read, "He'll probably be so busy putting democrats in jail that he'll forget to do anything else."

"Easier option let’s vote so He won’t be reelected," someone else proposed. Another mirrored the same opinion, stating, "The best strategy is to NOT re-elect him!!!!"

A user suggested, "The best tactic is to get him convicted and never to run as President." Another joked, "Jiggle some keys for geopolitical stability."
