WASHINGTON, DC: In a recent interview with CNN, former Attorney General Bill Barr ignited controversy by reaffirming his support for former President Donald Trump, despite facing harsh criticism from his ex-boss.

Barr, who has been vocal about his reservations regarding Trump's conduct since leaving the administration, stood firm in his stance, asserting that he believes Trump would cause less damage than President Biden.

Barr chimes in on Trump vs Biden

"I think that Biden is unfit for office," Barr asserted during the interview with CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins. "I think Trump would do less damage than Biden, and I think all this stuff about a threat to democracy — I think the real threat to democracy is the progressive movement and the Biden administration."

Collins pushed Barr further on his stance.

“Just to be clear, you’re voting for someone who you believe tried to subvert the peaceful transfer of power, that can’t even achieve his own policies, that lied about the election even after his attorney general told him that the election wasn’t stolen. … You’re going to vote for someone who is facing 88 criminal counts?” she asked.

Barr said, “Look, the 88 criminal counts, a lot of those are-” before Collins interjected, “Even if 10 of them are accurate?”

“The answer to the question is yes,” Barr insisted. “I’m supporting the Republican ticket.”

The former AG reiterated his belief that Trump would be less detrimental over the next four years.

“Between Biden and Trump, I will vote for Trump because I believe he will do less damage over the four years," he said. Barr pointed out differences between both parties and insisted that “the threat to freedom and democracy has always been on the left".

This endorsement from Barr, a figure who has previously criticized Trump's actions and leadership style, comes as a surprise to many. Just a year ago, Barr warned of potential chaos if Trump were to return to the White House and has been openly critical of Trump's legal troubles, labeling them as "entirely of his own making."

Trump responds to Barr's endorsement

In response to Barr's endorsement, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to express his gratitude. However, he couldn't resist taking a swipe at Barr.

“Wow! Former A.G. Bill Barr, who let a lot of great people down by not investigating Voter Fraud in our Country, has just Endorsed me for President despite the fact that I called him ‘Weak, Slow Moving, Lethargic, Gutless, and Lazy’ (New York Post!),” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“Based on the fact that I greatly appreciate his wholehearted Endorsement, I am removing the word ‘Lethargic’ from my statement. Thank you, Bill,” he added.

Barr, in turn, responded with a light-hearted acknowledgment of Trump's typical style.

“Classic Trump,” he told Collins of the comments. “I am very disappointed that this country is stuck with this choice … I don’t think either of them should be president of the United States, but given that binary choice, I feel like I have to choose Trump.”

Despite his endorsement of Trump, Barr has not shied away from criticizing the former president's behavior, particularly regarding the federal election subversion case.

Last year, Barr described Trump's alleged actions detailed in the indictment as "nauseating" and "despicable," asserting that such behavior should disqualify one from holding office, the New York Post reported.

Internet reacts to Barr's endorsement of Trump

Despite his endorsement of Trump, Barr faced considerable backlash on social media.

"He wants to be AG again," one posted on X.

"That’s because he is spineless. Guy keeps getting insulted but kisses Trump's a**," another chimed in.

"Bill Barr is a sellout and a traitor. We'll see if he committed any crimes when Trump gets re-elected," someone else alleged.

"Who cares what Barr says," a comment read.

"Biden's DOJ will be raiding his house soon," another user wrote.
