BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA: Graydon Carter, the legendary former editor of Vanity Fair, didn’t mince words when discussing Meghan Markle in an Interview Magazine feature, published on Thursday, March 27.

The Canadian journalist, known for his sharp wit, called the Duchess of Sussex "the Undine Spragg of Montecito," a biting reference to the ambitious and opportunistic heroine of Edith Wharton's 1913 novel, 'The Custom of the Country'.

In Edith Wharton's novel, Undine Spragg is a relentless socialite from the Midwest who maneuvers her way through high society, marrying and divorcing multiple men in pursuit of status. Despite achieving her materialistic dreams, she remains perpetually unsatisfied.

According to the LitCharts website, Spragg, who embodies greed and ambition, "feels little satisfaction in achieving her goals and often finds herself haunted by her failures." By the book’s conclusion, she gets everything she ever wanted, yet she still feels unfulfilled.

The reason Carter, 75, called Meghan "the Undine Spragg of Montecito" remains uncertain. However, Meghan, 43, left behind her acting career when she married Prince Harry in 2018.

The couple's highly publicized royal departure in 2020 led them to a lavish $14 million Montecito estate, where they’ve since pursued media ventures, including multimillion-dollar deals with Netflix and Spotify.

Harry and Meghan have worked with Netflix on multiple projects, such as their 2022 docuseries 'Harry & Meghan' and the Duchess of Sussex's latest lifestyle series, 'With Love, Meghan', which premiered on March 4.

The pair landed a $25 million deal with Spotify in 2021, leading to the launch of their 'Archetypes' podcast. However, they parted ways with the platform in 2023, with a source telling The New York Post that they hadn’t produced enough content to justify their hefty paycheck.

Earlier this month, Markle revealed she’s diving back into podcasting with 'Confessions', a new series in collaboration with Lemonada Media and rebranding her lifestyle brand to As Ever.
