George Clooney reveals why he didn't think he had a chance with Amal early in their romance
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: George Clooney, 63, and Amal Clooney, 47, are one of Hollywood's most beloved power couples, but their relationship had an unexpected beginning.
The 'Ocean's Eleven' actor once doubted he could build a life with Amal, thinking she wouldn’t be interested in him. The two first met in 2013 in Italy through a mutual friend, and after a few months of email exchanges, they began dating.
Their whirlwind romance culminated in a stunning wedding in Italy on September 27, 2014. Nearly three years later, the couple welcomed their twins, Ella and Alexander, on June 6, 2017, further solidifying their beautiful family life.
George Clooney didn't really think he would have much of a chance with Amal Clooney
In an interview with The New York Times published on February 20, George recalled the first time he saw Amal when she visited his Lake Como home before the Cannes Film Festival, saying, "Then Amal walked in. I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ Then I didn’t really think I’d have much of a chance with her because I was 17 years older and she seemed to have everything she needed."
The actor's agent, Bryan Lourd, predicted that the two would marry, but he wasn’t so sure, as per Parade.
Despite his doubts, George didn’t give up. He invited her to a London session he was scoring while she was in town working on women’s rights issues with the Muslim Brotherhood over Egypt's new constitution. He thought, "If you’re ever going to impress anybody, it’s with the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road."
The effort paid off, and the couple married in 2014, later becoming proud parents to Ella and Alexander.
However, George still worries about his age.
Reflecting on turning 60, he recalled telling Amal, "I had this conversation with Amal when I turned 60. I said, ‘Look, I can still play full-court basketball. I can still run around. I can still do pretty much everything I did when I was 30."
"But in 30 years, I’m 90. That’s a real number. My dad just hit that. And there are some things you’re not doing no matter how many granola bars you eat," the 'Ticket to Paradise' actor added.
He went on to tell her, "'We have to focus on the next 20, 25 years of making sure that we’re jamming in everything we can.' Not just work, because no one at the end of their life goes, 'God, I wish I worked more.'"

A source close to George and Amal Clooney recently told RadarOnline that while the couple publicly maintains their relationship is "as strong as ever," the spark between them has faded.
The tipster noted that their time apart wasn't helping their relationship. "Heaven knows why he took on a play that has taken him away from his family for months. It is not like he needs the money," they shared, referencing George's Broadway play, 'Good Night, And Good Luck', which begins previews in March.
The insider continued, "Their marriage has been strained for years and this move just shows the true landscape of their relationship. They are trying to work at it they are and telling friends they are as strong as ever but the one thing they are not lavishing on one another is time."
The source also highlighted Amal and George's efforts to maintain a healthy connection, saying, "Last year, they really committed to rekindling their connection and turning their attention back to their relationship."
"They've even started having some virtual dates over Zoom, ensuring they still have quality time to catch up and discuss more than just the children and their busy lives. But it is not the same as having the person in the same room. It is all show," they added.
