George Stephanopoulos set to host Biden's first post-debate interview but Internet says it'll be 'staged'
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Political commentator George Stephanopoulos of ABC News will get President Joe Biden's first post-debate interview, the network announced on Tuesday, July 2.
A "first look" from the interview, which is scheduled to be recorded on Friday, July 5, will premiere on 'World News Tonight' that evening, per ABC News.
Additional segments will be aired on 'Good Morning America' on Saturday and Sunday. This Sunday's 'This Week' and Monday's 'Good Morning America' will feature the "extended interview."
Joe Biden has granted far fewer interviews than other US presidents
George Stephanopoulos becomes one of the select few reporters who managed to secure a very uncommon follow-up interview with Joe Biden, who has given far fewer interviews than any of his predecessors.
Biden previously had his first interview with the ABC News anchor after the disorderly withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021.
Joe Biden is expected to face tough questions in the interview
While George Stephanopoulos is largely viewed by critics as a non-adversarial journalist for the president, Joe Biden is expected to face tough questions regarding his performance at last week's presidential debate and whether he will continue seeking reelection.
George Stephanopoulos has recently gone viral for his dramatic anti-Donald Trump monologues
The political commentator gained widespread attention in recent weeks with his dramatic anti-Donald Trump soliloquies on ABC's 'This Week'.
"In 1774, John Adams said, ‘representative government and trial by jury are the heart and lungs of liberty.' Two hundred-fifty years later, the heart and lungs of liberty are facing what may be the ultimate stress test," Stephanopoulos said following Trump's guilty verdict last month, per Fox News.
He added, "But for now, the New York jurors have already presented their fellow citizens with a choice: do we want to be represented, to be led for the first time in history by a convicted felon? That answer will come in November."
At the beginning of the trial in April, after listing all of Trump's other legal woes, Stephanopoulos told viewers, "It’s all too easy to fall into reflexive habits, to treat this as a normal campaign, where both sides embrace the rule of law, where both sides are dedicated to a debate based on facts and the peaceful transfer of power."
"But that is not what’s happening this election year. Those bedrock tenets of democracy are being tested in a way we haven’t seen since the Civil War. It’s a test for the candidates, for those of us in the media, and for all of us as citizens," he added.
George Stephanopoulos has had heated clashes with Republicans
Former President Bill Clinton's top aide George Stephanopoulos has engaged in bitter disputes with Republicans over their endorsement of the presumed GOP nominee.
One such Republican is Rep Nancy Mace, R-SC, a vocal survivor of sexual assault, whom he tried to discredit for her endorsement of Trump following the former president's decision to compensate accuser E Jean Carroll for her defamation suit.
Donald Trump filed his own defamation lawsuit against George Stephanopoulos
Donald Trump filed his own defamation lawsuit against George Stephanopoulos and ABC for repeatedly claiming in his exchange with Rep Nancy Mace that Trump was "found liable for rape" when the former president was actually found civilly liable for sexual abuse in the Carroll case.
Moreover, when moderating a town hall featuring Hunter Biden in October 2020, Stephanopoulos chose to ignore the topic of Biden's laptop.
Internet says George Stephanopoulos and Joe Biden's interview will be 'well staged'
Netizens questioned the transparency of the interview that will be conducted this week with Joe Biden.
One X (formerly Twitter) user commented, "Well, Since this is going to happen through a combination of Uber leftism corporations, it is going to be well staged."
Another wrote, "to be transparent and fair..I am sure this time they won’t give Biden the questions in advance…just the answers..forcing him to select the right answer to the right question…making it a much better game show…"
"So he's going to be giving all the questions reading off of note cards and have all the answers memorized," tweeted one user.
"The real story here is how credible Stephanopoulos is," remarked one.
"That will be edited for 36 hours until released," penned another.
So he's going to be giving all the questions reading off of note cards and have all the answers memorized.
