WASHINGTON, DC: Legislator Mazi Pilip of Nassau County apologized on Wednesday, February 28, for not pursuing Donald Trump's support during her unsuccessful attempt to succeed outgoing Representative George Santos in Congress.

Pilip, a registered Democrat running as a Republican at the time, fell short of Tom Suozzi by almost 7 points in the special election held on February 13 for the seat representing New York's 3rd Congressional District.

Pilip posted on X, "Fake news that I do not support Trump. I love Trump. Great President. My mistake not seeking his endorsement. #MAGA2024."

After Pilip switched to the Republican party, she made remarks endorsing the former president. She revealed the switch on Instagram this week.

While on the campaign road, Pilip stated that if Trump, 77, is found guilty of a felony before Election Day, she will not be supporting him in November.

The Ethiopia-born Nassau County legislator said during a candidate forum in January, "Nobody is above the law. If he’s convicted of a crime, he cannot represent us."

On Wednesday, Tom Suozzi, a six-year Long Island-Queens district representative, was formally inducted into Congress. Due to the Democratic triumph, House Republicans now only hold a 219–213 majority in Congress. This means that on any issue that all Democrats oppose, the GOP caucus can only afford two defections.

In his first floor speech, Suozzi attacked House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La), disputing the GOP leader's assertion that he "ran like a Republican."

He added, "I know compromise is hard in this town, Mr Speaker, but bring a bipartisan compromise to the floor and I guarantee it will pass. All of the issues we face in this country are complicated. Every single one of them. And you can’t solve anything in an environment of fear and anger."

Internet takes a jibe at Mazi Pilip after her apology

People on the internet trolled Mazi Pilip after she apologized to Donald Trump.

A user wrote on X, "It’s late… too bad, you should’ve and could’ve won", while another added, "Oops". Another person mentioned, "Well then. I’m especially grateful you did not win the special election in February. Now, go away!!"

A person also stated, "Guess this means you’re ready for round 2 of getting destroyed by Suozzi?" Another stated, "Well this makes rallying people to oppose you easier."
