WASHINGTON, DC: Republican lawmakers have called upon President Joe Biden to resign from the White House after he announced suspending his presidential campaign on Sunday, June 21.

In a public letter uploaded on the social media platform X, Biden wrote, "It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your president. And while it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term."

Since his announcement, Republicans have doubled down on their criticism of Biden's fitness to keep the top job, with vice presidential candidate JD Vance saying in an interview, "There is a constitutional process, the 25th Amendment. If Joe Biden can't run for president, he can't serve as president. And if they want to take him down because he is mentally incapable of serving, invoke the 25th Amendment."

GOP lawmakers call for Joe Biden's immediate dismissal

According to Fox News, House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La) led Republican legislators in insisting Joe Biden to resign from his presidency months ahead of the general election in November.

"If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President. He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough," he expressed in a statement.

"If the Democrat party has deemed Joe Biden unfit to run for re-election, he's certainly unfit to control our nuclear codes," said House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn). "Biden must step down from office immediately."

Their takes were echoed by House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who stated, "If Joe Biden can’t run for re-election, he is unable and unfit to serve as President of the United States. He must immediately resign. The Democrat Party is in absolute free fall for their blatantly corrupt and desperate attempt to cover up the fact that Joe Biden is unfit for office."

"If Joe Biden is unfit to be the Democrat nominee for president, he’s unfit to be president for the rest of his term. For the good of the country, Joe Biden should resign immediately," shared Republican Study Committee Chair Kevin Hern (R-Okla).

Republicans from the Senate lent their support to the demand as well, with Sen Steve Daines (R-Mont) stating, "If Joe Biden is no longer capable of running for re-election, he is no longer capable of serving as President. Being President is the hardest job in the world, and I no longer have confidence that Joe Biden can effectively execute his duties as Commander-in-Chief. It is out of concern for our country’s national security that I am formally calling on President Biden to resign from office."

Internet slams Mike Johnson for demanding Joe Biden's resignation

Netizens called out Speaker Mike Johnson and the GOP leaders for demanding immediate dismissal of the President on X. While some pointed out that their endorsed candidate Donald Trump was a "convicted felon," others claimed that the GOP was concerned about Joe Biden having complete presidential immunity as a result of recent SCOTUS ruling.

"Stop wasting your time.. he won't resign from office and you don't have the numbers to impeach him!" posted a person.

"Tough sell when your candidate is Trump," jibed another.

"Coming from a man who supports a convicted felon," echoed one user.

"So it’s not enough he stepped out of the race, they want him to resign now. Why? So he doesn’t use his absolute immunity powers against them?" inquired an individual.

"They’re just scared of what he’s going to do now that he doesn’t have to worry about reelection and he’s got immunity thanks to the court’s ruling. Let’s go Dark Brandon! It’s gonna be great!" commented someone else.
