WASHINGTON, DC: House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La) has called on President Joe Biden to fire Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle.

It comes following security failures related to the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump on Saturday, July 15.

Speaker Mike Johnson says accountability for Donald Trump's shooting 'begins at the top' administration

Mike Johnson stressed the importance of accountability, especially at higher levels of leadership.

“I’m prepared this morning to call on President Biden to — to fire — Director Cheatle,” Johnson said on Fox News on Thursday, July 18.

To involve the highest leadership comes as Cheatle asserts that she will not step down. Johnson criticized the oversight and mistakes, calling them "inexcusable."

“But the oversight here, the mistakes, the ineptitude, whatever it is, was inexcusable. We almost lost the life of a former president. And I think there has to be accountability and it begins at the top. This is ridiculous,” Johnson said as The Hill noted.

He also mentioned his intention to call Biden, although he noted that the president, currently isolating with Covid-19, “doesn’t take my calls all the time.”

Speaker Mike Johnson says Kimberly Cheatle's briefing did not give 'satisfactory answers'

Mike Johnson shared details about an unclassified briefing call for House members by Kimberly Cheatle and FBI Director Christopher Wray.

He mentioned the briefing did not provide satisfactory answers to some critical questions and suggested that some information might need to be discussed in a classified setting.

“They did not give satisfactory answers to some very important questions. And some of it needs to be in a classified setting, I suppose,” Johnson said.

The assassination attempt on Trump, which resulted in an injured ear for the former president and one rally attendee's death, has led to significant scrutiny.  A classified briefing for House members is planned for next week.

Johnson is also advocating for a bipartisan task force with subpoena authority to investigate the assassination attempt.

Internet reacts to Speaker Mike Johnson's call to Joe Biden asking for accountability

The reaction to Mike Johnson's call for Kimberly Cheatle’s firing has been mixed, with many netizens expressing skepticism about accountability within the Biden administration.

One X (formerly Twitter) user wrote, "Good call." Another added, "He hasn't fired anyone in his administration so far in his term, there's no accountability at all in this administration!"

"Exactly. Nobody is ever held accountable in this administration. Colossal screw-ups and not a single glue person fired. Insane," wrote one more.

One added, "In a normal administration, it would have happened already!"

Suggestions for alternative actions also surfaced, such as pulling Cheatle's salary or maintaining pressure through other means.

"He won’t. But you have the power of the purse. Pull her salary," one person suggested.

Another advised, "Keep the pressure on. Use whatever power you have and push the limits. From my perspective as a certified accident investigator, likely root causes seem to include lack of responsibility (all the way up the chain), policy deficiencies, training deficiencies, & skill deficiencies."

One voiced frustration over what he sees as a lack of action under the current administration, saying, "You cannot get fired under the Biden regime."
