WASHINGTON, DC: As a government shutdown loomed, House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries copied a tactic from Donald Trump’s playbook, but the move quickly backfired.

Jeffries tried to join the trend of political meme battles, like the one between Trump and Newsom, by mocking Vice President JD Vance online with a spin on the bald head meme. Instead of landing a blow, he drew widespread ridicule across social media

The Trump White House kicked things off on Monday, September 29, by posting an AI-generated video online. The clip showed Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer supposedly telling the truth about Democrats, mocking them, and featured House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries wearing a ridiculous sombrero. The image was meant to criticize Democrats for supporting illegal immigration.

Jeffries didn’t take it lightly. On Wednesday, October 1, he tried to hit back. He shared a video on the social media platform X showing Vice President JD Vance at a press conference.

But Jeffries edited the clip, adding a well-known meme that makes fun of Vance by showing him with a bald head, puffed-out cheeks, and an awkward stare into the camera. The meme appears about 20 seconds into the video.

Vance didn’t react negatively. In fact, he finds the meme funny. According to the website Know Your Meme, this joke has been around for a while, and Vance has never reacted negatively. Back in March, a reporter from TheBlaze, Julio Rosas, noted on X that Vance has seen many of the memes and considers them part of a funny online trend. Social media users, however, saw Jeffries’ attempt as a weak jab, because it’s hard to mock someone who is already in on the joke.

Hakeem Jeffries’ meme attack on JD Vance backfires online

Hakeem Jeffries’ video mocking Vice President JD Vance racked up millions of views, but it quickly backfired, sparking widespread online ridicule. Many users on X mocked Jeffries for what they saw as an embarrassing and ineffective attempt at meme warfare.

One user sneered, “Oh, you thought you did something, didn’t you?”

Another joked, “All capitalized ‘Bro’… such a weirdo 🤣🤣🤣.”

A third wrote bluntly, “This is embarrassing lol.”

Others offered unsolicited advice. “Dude. You’ve already lost. Try and save some of your dignity,” one commenter said.

Another observed, “To not know this meme has become cherished, and heartwarming to the Right speaks volumes... They are not fit for Meme warfare Hit a split on em' @JDVance ..."

Some highlighted how Jeffries misunderstood the meme entirely. “Bro thinks this is a troll of @JD Vance Oh no sir. It's a legend,” one person quipped.

Another added, “JD finds this meme hilarious, you're not exactly doing what you think you're doing here."

One user summed it up, “I love that you think this is some kind of gotcha, as if @jdvance doesn’t tweet out this meme himself. It’s a character created by the right out of endearment, and you think it’s some kind of dig. 😂.”

Someone one else wrote, “We’re not trapped in here with you, you’re trapped in here with us.”
