‘He needs lot of help’: Harvey Weinstein’s lawyer says movie mogul is hospitalized after returning to NYC
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has been hospitalized for a series of tests following his return to New York City on Saturday, April 27.
This comes after an appeals court overturned his 2020 rape conviction. On Friday, April 26, Weinstein was put in a special cell for inmates with medical issues at Rikers’ West Facility soon after he arrived at the city jail from upstate.
Harvey Weinstein's lawyer says he is a train wreck
His lawyer, Arthur Aidala, stated on Saturday, April 27, that Weinstein was moved to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan after he arrived at city jail.
Aidala described Weinstein’s health as “somewhat of a train wreck.” He said, "They examined him and sent him to Bellevue. It seems like he needs a lot of help, physically," the Associated Press reported.
"He’s got a lot of problems. He’s getting all kinds of tests," Frank Dwyer, a spokesperson with the New York City Department of Correction, said, confirming that Weinstein remains in custody at Bellevue.
Harvey Weinstein's legal troubles: Conviction nullified and retrial ordered
On Thursday, April 25, the New York Court of Appeals vacated his conviction after concluding that a trial judge permitted jurors to see and hear too much evidence not directly related to the charges he faced.
The court also erased his 23-year prison sentence and ordered a retrial. Prosecutors have said they intend to retry him on charges that he forcibly performed oral sex on a TV and film production assistant in 2006 and raped an aspiring actor in 2013.
Despite the appeals ruling, Weinstein remained in custody because he was convicted in Los Angeles in 2022 of another rape and was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
“He was not treated well," Aidala said of the treatment Weinstein was met with during transit. He said he was not even allowed to go to the bathroom nor give a drop-off water.
Internet reacts to Harvey Weinstein's hospitalization
Meanwhile, the internet has reacted to Weinstein’s hospitalization with mixed feelings.
One user wrote, “Sounds like karma’s doing its thing.” Another added, “And I thought it was bad news."
"Let’s hope it’s debilitating but not deadly," wrote one. One user suggested, “I hope they have security at his door…breaking out of Bellevue would be too ironic.”
Others expressed hope that he wouldn’t be released, with one writing, “Good. Here’s hoping he doesn’t come back out,” and another stating, “Good, he deserves it."
"Don’t die now, rot in jail!” wrote another, as another user speculated, “Postponed jail. It’s a ploy.”
