WASHINGTON, DC: Two House committees under Republican leadership will move forward with resolutions to find Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress on Thursday, May 16, according to Daily Mail.

This week, there are scheduled meetings for the markup of contempt resolutions by the Oversight and Judiciary committees, respectively.

Both Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan and Oversight Chairman James Comer have sent subpoenas to Attorney General Garland for the audio recording of former special counsel Robert Hur's interview with Joe Biden. They argue that since Garland has ignored both subpoenas, both committees intend to pursue contempt charges against him.

As per the Justice Department, the Republicans' requests for information have been met with more than reasonable accommodations. While they have received an interview transcript, the department has not provided the actual audio recording as requested.

Notably, Comer informed DailyMail.com on Monday, May 13, "There must be consequences for refusing to comply with lawful congressional subpoenas and we will move to hold Attorney General Garland in contempt of Congress."

He added, "These audio recordings are important to our investigation of President Biden’s willful retention of classified documents and his fitness to be President of the United States."

The Attorney General was required to provide the necessary materials from Robert Hur's conversations with Biden, which led to his conclusion that the president is "elderly" and "well-meaning" but has a "poor memory," by April 8th.

Significantly, subpoenas were issued for transcripts, notes, audio recordings, and video data primarily pertaining to Hur's interview.

Moreover, Republicans are not happy, despite the DOJ providing transcripts of Hur's interviews with Biden and the text and audio recordings of an interview with Biden's ghostwriter Mark Zwonitzer. They have stated that they also require the audio from Hur's interview.

However, the DOJ claimed that it had already been "extraordinarily" flexible in providing the Biden transcript in a letter sent in April to the chairmen of the GOP committees.

They argued that if witnesses were aware that the audio might be made public, prosecutors could encounter greater difficulty in obtaining recorded interviews in the future if the audio was also disclosed.

The letter, authored by Assistant Attorney General Carlos Uriarte, stated, "The Committees have already received the extraordinary accommodation of the transcripts, which provides you with the information you claim to require."

"To go further by producing the audio files would compound the likelihood that future prosecutors will be unable to secure this level of cooperation. They might have a harder time obtaining consent to an interview at all. It is clearly not in the public interest to render such cooperation with prosecutors and investigators less likely in the future," the letter added.
