'Audition over': Internet slams Robert Hur as he stands by his assessment of Joe Biden’s ‘poor memory’
WASHINGTON, DC: During his Tuesday, March 12, hearing before members of the US Congress, Special Counsel Robert Hur reportedly defended his assessment of President Joe Biden's "poor memory".
Hur told the House Judiciary Committee that the assessment was essential to his inquiry into the possibility that the President purposefully withheld classified information while he was not in office, Al Jazeera reported.
Robert Hur says he 'had to consider the president’s memory'
Hur informed the committee, "My task was to determine whether the president retained or disclosed national defense information willfully — meaning knowingly and with the intent to do something the law forbids. For that reason, I had to consider the president’s memory and overall mental state."
After Hur published a special report in February, detailing Biden's inability to recall specifics, such as the dates surrounding his son Beau's death, concerns were raised over the President's memory.
Hur stated in the report that Biden would appear before a jury "as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory" and advised against filing charges. Nevertheless, Republicans and Democrats alike criticized his conclusions.
Notably, Democrats said the probe unnecessarily brought up Biden's age, which has turned into a contentious election issue in 2024 as people wonder if he is qualified for a second term.
Meanwhile, Republicans, on the other hand, jumped on Hur's article to claim that Biden was receiving special treatment in comparison to former president Donald Trump, who is accused of holding onto secret information.
Moreover, Hur told legislators, "My assessment in the report about the relevance of the president’s memory was necessary and accurate and fair. I did not sanitize my explanation, nor did I disparage the president unfairly."
However, prominent members of the House from both parties resisted Hur's judgment. Representative Adam Schiff, a Democrat, said, "You cannot tell me you’re so naive as to think your words would not have created a political firestorm. You were not born yesterday. You understood exactly what you were doing. It was a choice. You certainly didn’t have to include that language."
Furthermore, Hur was accused by Representative Matt Gaetz and other Republican Party members of exploiting Biden's memory as a justification for not prosecuting him. Additionally, they attempted to paint Hur's evaluation of Biden as a continuation of an ongoing double standard that unjustly singled out Trump.
Gaetz said, "Biden and Trump should have been treated equally. They weren’t. And that is the double standard that I think a lot of Americans are concerned about."

Another stated, "This is insane!!!! I don’t know why Republicans had Hur come on here, and I don’t think they expected the full video and the full report to come out."
