Home where Brittany Murphy died and Britney Spears fled from never to return listed for sale at $18M
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: A house with a dark and mysterious history is back on the market for $18 million. The property, once home to late actress Brittany Murphy, is where she tragically died at the age of 32 in December 2009. Five months later, her husband Simon Monjack was discovered dead inside the premises.
Adding to its eerie legacy, the home also has ties to pop star Britney Spears, who famously fled the residence after reportedly experiencing a supernatural encounter and never returned.
Brittany Murphy and Simon Monjack's mysterious deaths raised questions about Hollywood home
The deaths of Murphy and Monjack have remained a mystery for the past 15 years, and there has been conjecture about the potential involvement of their former home in the puzzling tale, ranging from reports of unearthly encounters to theories that something else in the house might have been involved, PEOPLE reported.
According to property records, Murphy paid $3.85 million to purchase the fully furnished house from Spears and moved into it in 2003. She and Monjack, whom she married in May 2007, resided in the home for less than six years.
Sharon Murphy, Brittany's mother, who lived with the couple, called 911 the day of Brittany's death after the 'Clueless' star passed out at 8 am following a few days of flu-like symptoms.
After being transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center by the Los Angeles Fire Department, the actress was later declared dead.
Untreated pneumonia, anemia, and drug intoxication from prescription and over-the-counter medications, such as painkillers and cold remedies, were identified as the causes of her death.
However, before the death of her son, Simon's mother Linda Monjac sparked rumors that the house had "severe mold" by telling the Daily Mail in 2013.
She said, "All I know is that before Simon's death, he was having hallucinations that things were crawling out of his skin."
Brittany Spears claimed she had supernatural encounter at home
According to Murphy and Spears, the house's previous owners, there was a sinister vibe to the place. Spears reportedly claimed to have had an unearthly encounter that caused her to leave the house and never return.
In February 2021, Julianne Kaye, the singer's former makeup artist, recounted the incident on an episode of the 'We Need to Talk About Britney' podcast.
"[Spears] had that place up on Sunset Plaza — and I'm just gonna say, this is really weird … She calls me … I had my friend do reiki healing on her," Kaye said.
She added, "He had come up; I guess she'd had a crazy partying weekend and needed to relax. He left, and she swears to God that he opened some spirit portal or something, and these bad spirits had come in … and they were trying to, like, push her down the stairs or something crazy."
Kaye continued, "It was so bad that she left," asserting that Spears never came back to the house after running away to the Casa Del Mar hotel. "She goes, 'I know you're gonna think I'm crazy. I'm not crazy. I know what I saw. I know what I felt.'"
Murphy seemed to sense that something was wrong with the house even though she never claimed to see ghosts. Shortly after Murphy's death, Monjack revealed in a January 2011 interview with The Hollywood Reporter that his late wife made every effort to avoid the house.
Murphy, Simon told reporters, considered the property "unlucky."
Brittany Murphy's former home now listed for $18 million
Since Murphy and Monjack died, the house has gone through several ownership changes. The current owners, who bought it in 2020, recently listed it for sale once again. Los Angeles alumnus David Parnes of Carolwood Estates has it listed for $17,995,000 on Million Dollar Listing.
The house has been "reborn," having "undergone a complete metamorphosis" since Murphy's stay there, according to the listing. The front entry has been "recently reimagined," the exterior has been "newly redesigned," and the interior and outdoor living areas have been updated.
However, a cursory examination of the address reveals its more complex history. In the summer of 2024, the current owners briefly listed the 9,400-square-foot, six-bedroom, nine-bathroom spread for sale for $19 million before removing it.
It is still seeking a new resident after almost three months even though the asking price has been reduced by one million dollars.
Internet reacts as Brittany Murphy's former home goes up for sale
As soon as the news of Brittany Murphy's house being on sale surfaced on the internet, social media expressed their views on the same on Facebook.
A social media user said, "This house needs a good cleansing. Spirits do linger until they are cast or thrown out."
Another added, "I believe it all. Some places are just unholy. Public records could show what was there way before the house. Seems like it wasn't just Britney. Brittany also sensed something wrong there."
The third commentator expressed fear and wrote, "Didn’t both her and her husband both die from mould exposure? I wouldn’t go near that house if you paid me to live there."
"The house needs praying thru," said one individual.
Another person said, "It's not a joke. When spirits claim a house it's virtually impossible to be rid of them. Some spirits are destructive, harmful, hateful, nothing to be messed with. Spears was wise to leave the house & not return..."
On the other hand, some of Murphy's fans remembered her in the comments section of the Facebook post.
A comment read, "She was a great actress. Her death was tragic. So young."
Another chimed in, "Brittany Murphy was a great actress. It would have been great to see her future movies"
