WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump marked the one-year anniversary of his second stint in the Oval Office by praising his own performance and recalling how dire conditions allegedly were when he returned to office.

Speaking to reporters in remarks captured by Fox News on the eve of his January 20 inauguration anniversary, Trump offered his assessment of his first year while standing on the tarmac moments before departure.

“I don't think any president has had a better first year than we've had, in terms of success,” Trump said. “I inherited a mess, and now we have the hottest country anywhere in the world.”

Trump frames his presidency as a rapid turnaround

Throughout the year, Trump has repeatedly described his administration as one that took office amid chaos.

The president laid out his case in a December Truth Social post. “I inherited a MESS from the Biden Administration, The Worst Inflation in History, and the Highest Prices our Country has ever seen,” he wrote.

“In other words, Affordability, just 13 months ago, was a DISASTER for the American People, but now, it’s totally different! Prices are coming down FAST, Energy, Oil and Gasoline, are hitting five year lows, and the Stock Market today just hit an All Time High.”

He echoed the same message during a White House speech later that month. “11 months ago I inherited a mess, and I'm fixing it,” he said in a video address. During a White House meeting that same month, Trump placed the blame squarely on Democrats while claiming credit for the turnaround.

“We inherited a mess,” he said. “Affordability, but you can call it affordability or anything you want, but the Democrats caused the affordability problem and we're the ones that are fixing it.”

Trump touts US as the 'hottest country in the world'

Trump has repeatedly used the phrase “hottest country in the world” to describe what he views as America’s resurgence, insisting that foreign leaders agree with his assessment.

He reinforced the message during his latest remarks on the tarmac.

“The primary message is how well the United States is doing,” he said. “And I say it all the time, a year and half ago we were a dead country, and now we have the hottest country in the world.”

Trump brushes off polls and price concerns

Trump’s first year back in office has drawn scrutiny over continued economic pressures, including the impact of tariffs on prices and mixed signals from job data. Polls and reports tracking policy outcomes have noted that many voters still feel squeezed by everyday costs, even as the administration points to falling prices and market highs.

Trump has largely brushed off the criticism. During a recent exchange with CBS News’ Tony Dokoupil, the president was pressed on why many Americans say they are not feeling economic relief.

“Mr President, help me understand,” Dokoupil said. “When I travel the country, and I go all over the place, and I talk to everyday Americans, they tell me they don't feel it, because grocery prices are up.”

“Well, they might not, but they're going to now,” Trump replied. “I've only been here for 11 months, okay? And, you know, the first few months were really rough if you look at 'em, because I inherited a mess. I inherited a mess of crime. I inherited a mess of inflation. I inherited a mess of places closing up and going to other countries."

“Tony, we have now the hottest country in the world. And a year and a half ago our country was dead. We had a dead country. You wouldn't have a job right now. If [Kamala Harris] got in, you probably wouldn't have a job right now,” he added.
