FORT COLLINS, COLORADO: John Ashton, the actor best known for his iconic role in Beverly Hills Cop, died peacefully at the age of 76 after a long battle with cancer. He spent his final moments in the comfort of his home in Fort Collins, Colorado.

"John leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and service," his rep Alan Somers shared with the media. "His memory will forever be treasured by his wife, children, grandchildren, as well as his brother, sisters, his extended family, and all who loved him. John's impact on the world will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come."

In place of flowers, Ashton's family has requested that donations be made to Pathways Hospice Care, TMZ reported.

John Ashton’s remarkable legacy: From 'Beverly Hills Cop' to 'Midnight Run'

John Ashton’s career spanned five decades, during which he graced the screen in over 200 films, TV shows, and stage productions. But of course, his most memorable role was Detective Sergeant John Taggart in 'Beverly Hills Cop'.

Who could forget the straight-laced, by-the-book cop who had to tolerate Eddie Murphy's antics as Axel Foley? Ashton's chemistry with Murphy was undeniable, contributing to the 1984 film's status as an instant classic.

While 'Beverly Hills Cop' catapulted Ashton to household name status, it was far from his only project. Out of the four 'Beverly Hills Cop' films, Ashton appeared in three, including the latest sequel, 'Beverly Hills Cop 4: Axel F', which was released on Netflix this past July. The film received positive reviews, with many praising it as one of the best sequels in the franchise.

Ashton also displayed his acting talents in other major hits, including his role in 'Midnight Run', where he starred alongside the legendary Robert De Niro. Ashton portrayed Marvin Dorfler, a rival bounty hunter, further demonstrating his ability to hold his own against Hollywood royalty like De Niro.

Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, Ashton developed a passion for acting at a young age. He studied at the University of Southern California, where he earned a BA in Theater Arts. His professional journey began on stage, with his debut role in the premiere production of 'Othello' at the Hartford Stage Company.

He even toured Europe with the USA Festival Theater Tour, performing in 15 different productions. That early stage experience refined his talents, and Ashton soon began branching out into television.

In his long TV career, he guest-starred in a string of hit shows such as 'Law and Order: SVU', 'Police Squad', and 'Police Story'. His most recent acclaimed film was 'Once Upon A River' — a project that earned him the LA Method Fest award for Best Supporting Actor.

Throughout his life, Ashton adhered to a simple yet profound motto he learned from his high school drama teacher: "Think big, work hard, have a dream, and make a difference." And he truly made a difference.

Co-star Judge Reinhold's touching tribute to John Ashton

Judge Reinhold, John Ashton’s longtime co-star in the 'Beverly Hills Cop' franchise, took to social media to pay tribute to his dear friend. Reinhold and Ashton were cherished by fans for their roles as the unforgettable cop duo, Billy Rosewood and John Taggart. He expressed his grief and affection for Ashton on X (formerly Twitter), sharing a series of photos of the two together.

"Thursday night John seemed like he was sleeping but the Yankees were on. They won the game, clinched the division then John made it to home," Reinhold wrote. "Forty years of laughs on screen and off. John LIVED his life! My brother, my partner, my Sarge - I love you. There’s no smoking in Heaven, John."

While Ashton is best remembered for his acting, he had other passions that brought him joy, with golf being one of them. According to his obituary, Ashton was "always trying new techniques to improve his game and ensured he had the latest and most up-to-date equipment."

"However, it was his work as an actor/entertainer in theater, film, and television where his skill and dedication were most clearly demonstrated. John devoted his career to honing his craft and bringing characters to life on the screen. His presence will be greatly missed," the obituary added.

Ashton is survived by his wife of 24 years, Robin Hoye, his sisters Sharon and Linda, and his brother Edward. He leaves behind two children, Michelle and Michael, as well as three stepchildren, Courtney, Lindsay, and Ashley. His grandson Henry "held a cherished place in his heart," Page Six reported.
