WASHINGTON, DC: Rep Ilhan Omar argued there was "no justification" for the federal government’s response amid a major welfare fraud investigation in Minnesota. Federal authorities estimated in December that suspected fraud within Minnesota’s Medicaid program had surpassed $9 billion. Several federal agencies are now investigating the matter.

During an appearance with Margaret Brennan on 'Face the Nation' on Sunday, January 11, Omar criticized the federal presence tied to the investigation. She said, “It is just creating fear," and later added, "There is no reason to have over 2,000 people coming into our city." As per her, these are for "PR purposes."

Ilhan Omar says Somali fraud enforcement lacks a legal basis

Ilhan Omar argued the operation lacked legal grounding and accused federal authorities of acting primarily for public relations rather than public safety. Speaking with Margaret Brennan, Omar said the federal response was unnecessarily aggressive and harmful to the community.

"It is just creating fear. What they are doing is creating confusion, chaos, trying to intimidate people from being able to exercise their regular, normal activities that they would. There is no justification in any of the things that they say,” Omar told Brennan on 'Face the Nation'.

“The 87 people that you’ve described as being investigated, many of them adjudicated, all happened under the Biden administration. There is no justification for the search. We know that ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) has the ability to conduct raids."

"There is no reason to have over 2,000 people coming into our city and creating the level of terror that they have created," she insisted. Omar maintained that both federal and state authorities had already addressed the alleged misconduct through coordinated legal processes.

The congresswoman said those efforts had resulted in accountability without the need for sweeping enforcement actions. “The federal government and the state have been working peacefully together and have brought justice to these 87 people that you’ve described. None of the search that they have conducted has produced any sort of criminal activity. They haven’t been able to charge anyone as of yet,” Omar claimed.

“Well, the administration had also announced they’re going to cut food stamps to Minnesota because some of the money had been embezzled here,” Brennan responded.

Omar rejected the statement and said the issue was already before the courts. “It is being litigated and it is unconstitutional for them to do so," the Democrat claimed. "There is no reason for them to use this level of rhetoric. There is no reason for them to fully stop funding these programs... It is harming my constituents."

"The only reason they are doing that is for PR (public relations) purposes and it is harming our state, it is harming my constituents, and it is creating the kind of chaos and confusion that no one needs in this moment," she concluded.

The Trump administration has paused child care payments to the state while welfare programs undergo audits. Most of the individuals charged so far in connection with the scheme are of Somali descent.

The Department of Homeland Security reported that recent immigration enforcement actions in the Minneapolis area led to multiple arrests. According to the agency, those taken into custody included convicted s** offenders, individuals with d**g-related convictions, and people previously found guilty of assault, as per the Daily Caller.
