MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: Rep Ilhan Omar (D-Minn) lauded her daughter Isra Hirsi a day after the Ivy League college student was arrested in New York City during an anti-Israel protest.

"She has always led with courage and compassion, from organizing a statewide school walk out on the 20th anniversary of Columbine at the age of 15, to leading the biggest youth climate rally at our nation’s Capitol at 16, and now pushing her school to stand against genocide,” the progressive congresswoman continued.
"Stepping up to change what you can’t tolerate is why we as a country have the right to speech, assembly, and petition enshrined in our constitution," she wrote.
Why was Isra Hirsi arrested?
Following demonstrations at Columbia University, Isra Hirsi was one of over a hundred individuals detained and summoned for trespassing, according to Fox News.
Her statement a few hours earlier confirmed that she had been suspended from Barnard College for "standing in solidarity with Palestinians facing a genocide."

The New York Police Department was called in by the school to assist in clearing out the campsite.
President Minouche Shafik of Columbia University explained in a statement to students that "extraordinary steps" were required "because these are extraordinary circumstances," and that protesters "violated a long list of rules and policies."
Rep Omar questioned Shafik this week at a hearing in Washington in regards to antisemitism on college campuses.
