Jennifer Lopez was 'done waiting' for Ben Affleck and finally filed for divorce to end split speculations
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Jennifer Lopez has finally put an end to the rumors that had been circulating for months when she filed for divorce from Ben Affleck on Tuesday, August 20.
During the last few months of their marriage, the estranged couple was observed in a growing number of uncomfortable and unpleasant public interactions that suggested that their marriage would not last.
Jennifer Lopez 'was done waiting' before filing for divorce from Ben Affleck
The shocking court filings appeared almost more than two years after the July 2022 marriage in Las Vegas of the 55-year-old songstress and the 52-year-old actor and filmmaker.
According to several previously verified sources, Lopez, the mother of the 16-year-old twins Emme and Max, filed a case at the Los Angeles County Superior Court with a date of separation of April 26, 2024.
Affleck, who is the father to Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12 (with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner), had been away from Lopez for the majority of the summer.
Only hours after Lopez and Affleck filed for divorce on Tuesday, August 20, an exclusive source told People that Lopez "was done waiting."
The source added: "She tried really hard to make things work and is heartbroken. The kids are a top priority, as they always have been."
According to a second source, Lopez is prepared to "move on" from Affleck. "She's very disappointed and sad, but Ben hasn't given her any signs that he wants to continue their marriage," claimed the source.
The source said of Affleck, "He hasn’t shown any commitment and interest in making their marriage work. It’s gotten to the point that she just needs to look out for herself," per the New York Post.
The last time Lopez and Affleck were together was on his 52nd birthday, which, according to a source, he celebrated with his children by hosting a small "celebration at home."
The insider told People at the time, "It's exactly what he wanted. He didn't want to go out to celebrate. The kids had gifts for him, and it was cute. Jennifer [Lopez] stopped by to congratulate him," adding that Garner had swung in his rental home the same day.
Jennifer Lopez decides to file for divorce on their second anniversary
The couple separated over the summer, and Lopez's decision to file for divorce on the second anniversary of their second wedding ceremony suggests that the Hollywood couple was headed for an early divorce.
Lopez made an appearance at the Met Gala alone in April, shortly after the separation date she mentioned in the court documents, obtained by TMZ.
The couple's reported lack of a prenuptial agreement will probably complicate their divorce and put a significant amount of assets at risk. All income, gains, and assets accumulated by the couple throughout their marriage are deemed common property under California law.
Through her newsletter, Lopez announced their July 2022 wedding in Las Vegas, describing it as "the best possible wedding we could have imagined" with Affleck.
In contrast, Affleck was more circumspect while discussing their renewed romance in public. "One of the harder lessons that I have learned is that it’s not wise to share everything with the world," Affleck stated in a Wall Street Journal interview from December 2021.
Affleck added, "I just don’t want to be talking about my personal relationship in the newspaper," about the "healthy boundaries" he has placed in his life.
