WASHINGTON, DC: House Speaker Mike Johnson announced that he would not seek to change the rule that allows a single member to force a vote on whether to oust the speaker on Thursday, April 18.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, "Since the beginning of the 118th Congress, the House rule allowing a Motion to Vacate from a single member has harmed this office and our House majority."

"Recently, many members have encouraged me to endorse a new rule to raise this threshold. While I understand the importance of that idea, any rule change requires a majority of the full House, which we do not have. We will continue to govern under the existing rules," asserted Johnson.

Conservatives have been enraged with House Speaker Mike Johnson

The rule was part of the deal former Speaker Kevin McCarthy made with hardliners back in January 2023 to get the job, ultimately leading to his downfall in October, as per CBS News

Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene, who filed a motion to oust Johnson from his role back in March, and other conservative lawmakers were outraged by a potential modification in the threshold for replacing the speaker.

Greene remarked, "Kevin McCarthy, while he was staring down the barrel of a loaded gun, he never made a move like this behind closed doors and made deals with Democrats to change the motion to vacate. This is the type of betrayal that Republican voters are absolutely fed up with."

Internet reacts to Speaker Mike Johnson's decision

A person wrote, "Resign traitor," and another added, "Step down Speaker Johnson. You’ve failed the American people by caving to Joe Biden. You’re putting Ukraine first and our border last. I won’t even talk about our right to privacy. You’re a huge disappointment. Step down now."

"You sure let the country down, Mike. Resign," echoed a person, while someone else asked, "And by 'govern' you mean 'doing exactly what the Democrats tell you to do or else,' right?"

"You wouldn't be facing that if you governed like a conservative and not like a Democrat," remarked an individual.
