EAGLE PASS, TEXAS: Former President Donald Trump, during a visit to Eagle Pass, Texas on Thursday, February 29, unveiled a new moniker for California's Democratic Governor, Gavin Newsom, dubbing him "Newscum".

The occasion marked a showdown between Trump and President Joe Biden, who both visited the Texas border as immigration takes center stage in the 2024 campaign.

Trump's new nickname for Newsom

Flanked by Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council, Trump lambasted Newsom, accusing him of facilitating illegal immigration by offering free services such as education and healthcare to undocumented migrants.

"You look at what this governor, Newscum, from California. Isn't that his name, Newscum? What he's done in California is unbelievable," he said. "People are pouring in. They think they are going to get medical aid."

Trump's scathing remarks highlighted what he perceived as a neglect of American citizens, particularly veterans, in favor of migrants. "And our soldiers, our vets, aren't being taken care of," the former president said.

Tradition of nicknaming rivals

The former president's penchant for nicknaming political adversaries is well-documented, with a Wikipedia page dedicated to cataloging them. Reflecting on his history of name-calling, Trump in 2016 labeled Hillary Clinton as "crooked," a title he now bestows upon President Biden.

"I took the name away from Hillary because she's no longer relevant, I guess, she was terrible, but what he's doing is just unbelievable," Trump said.

"I call him 'Crooked Joe' because's crooked, he's a terrible president, he's the worst president our country's ever had, probably the most incompetent president we've ever had," he also said.

The former president has targeted other political figures such as Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis, albeit with varying degrees of success.

Haley earned the nickname "bird brain", while DeSantis, who dropped out of the 2024 presidential race in late January, was dubbed both "DeSanctimonious" and "DeSanctus" by Trump. Notably, Trump retired the nickname "DeSanctimonious" upon DeSantis' endorsement of his 2024 presidential bid.

In addition to Haley and DeSantis, Trump also targeted former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, whom he called "Sloppy." Christie - once a debate coach for Trump - faced ridicule from the former president, including fat jokes, during their political clashes.

Border visits amid congressional debates

Trump's visit to the US-Mexico border coincided with ongoing debates among congressional lawmakers over spending measures related to national security and immigration. House Republicans have adamantly opposed President Biden's proposals, further fueling the partisan divide on immigration policy.

Meanwhile, President Biden also visited the southern border, accompanied by federal US Border Patrol agents and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Biden's approach to immigration has sparked clashes with Texas Republicans, including Governor Abbott, who advocate for stricter border controls.

Governor Newsom, a staunch supporter of President Biden, has engaged in similar disputes with Republican counterparts over immigration policies.

While California's southern border experiences a surge in migrant encounters, Newsom has pursued a distinct approach, expanding healthcare access for undocumented immigrants earlier this year, Newsweek reported.

Trump's decision to nickname Newsom underscores the political rivalries ahead of the 2024 elections.

Interestingly, Newsom's connection to the Trump family adds a personal dimension to the political feud, as his ex-wife, Kimberly Guilfoyle, is engaged to Donald Trump Jr. This familial tie further complicates the dynamic between Newsom and the Trumps.

Internet reacts to new nickname

The unveiling of the nickname "Newscum" prompted a wave of reactions on social media, with some declaring it as a game-changer for Newsom's political future.

"That’s gameover for Newsome," one posted on X.

"You could tell all those guys wanted to laugh," another wrote.

"I like 'Gruesome Newsom' but Newscum has fewer syllables," someone else added.

"Love it!! He's right you know," a comment read.

"You're done once Trump slaps a nickname on ya.. quicksand," another chimed in.
