Internet dismayed as poll shows Kamala Harris is doing better than Joe Biden in matchup with Donald Trump
WASHINGTON, DC: Three-quarters of voters believe that if someone other than President Joe Biden led the Democratic Party, the party would have a greater chance of retaining the White House, according to a recent nationwide poll.
Additionally, the poll, which CNN released on Tuesday, July 2, indicates that Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumed GOP nominee, does marginally better than Joe Biden in a matchup with former President Trump.
The latest survey was carried out solely in response to Biden's incredibly poor showing during the in-person matchup between the two front-runners of the major party last Thursday.
Political commentators and several pundits have asked Joe Biden to resign
At 81, Biden is the oldest president in American history and is currently in the most difficult phase of his campaign for a second term in office. This, coupled with his faltering answers and halting delivery during the debate, caused a great deal of anxiety within the Democratic Party and prompted demands for Biden to resign as the party's 2024 standard-bearer from political pundits, editorial writers, certain party politicians, and donors.
Majority of the voters think Democrats will be in better place without Joe Biden
The poll indicates that 75% of voters and 56% of voters who identify as Democratic would prefer that the Democratic Party retain control of the presidency in the event that Biden is not the party's standard-bearer.
Conversely, 83% of voters who identified as Republicans and 60% of voters overall stated that the GOP has a greater chance of winning the presidency with Trump as the nominee than with any other candidate.
The national registered voter base continues to favor Trump by six points, 49% to 43%, as of the CNN poll conducted in April. Furthermore, since last autumn, CNN polls have shown that Trump is still leading in this regard.
Kamala Harris trails Donald Trump by just two points
However, the poll indicates that in a fictitious matchup, the vice president would trail Trump by just two points, 47%-45%. "Harris’ slightly stronger showing against Trump rests at least in part on broader support from women (50% of female voters back Harris over Trump vs. 44% for Biden against Trump) and independents (43% Harris vs. 34% Biden)," the poll notes in a release, as per Fox News.
Other high-profile Democrats' popularity if they replace Biden as the nominee
The poll, which ran from Friday, June 28, through Sunday, June 30, was conducted exclusively following last week's debate. It also evaluated other prominent Democrats who have been suggested as potential successors in the unlikely event that Biden withdraws his bid for a second term.
California Governor Gavin Newsom trails Trump 48%-43%, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who ran for the 2020 Democratic nomination, trails Trump 47%-43%, and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is down to Trump 47%-42%, according to hypothetical matchups in the survey.
Joe Biden's campaign insisted that he will stay in the race
The president does not intend to withdraw from the race, according to Biden's campaign's repeated assertions.
As per the survey, Biden's support among Democratic voters has increased slightly from 85% in April to 91% now. Concurrently, Trump has the support of 93% of Republicans, which is roughly the same as in April. However, the survey reveals that among independents, Trump has a 10-point lead.
The CNN poll was released just hours after a USA Today/Suffolk University survey that was conducted from Friday through Sunday also found that 41% of registered voters nationwide supported Trump, while 38% supported Biden. The previous USA Today/Suffolk University poll, conducted in May, had the Democratic incumbent in the White House and his Republican predecessor tied at 37%.
There were other red flags for Biden, even though Trump's lead in the latest survey was within the poll's plus or minus 3.1 percentage point margin of error.
41% of Democrats questioned said they wanted Biden replaced
41% of Democrats surveyed in the poll, which was made public on Monday afternoon, stated they wanted Biden to be replaced as the leader of the Democratic Party. Merely 14% of Republicans who responded to the survey expressed their desire to see someone other than Trump lead the GOP.
"There's no question the debate sent out shock waves across the political landscape," Suffolk Political Research Center director David Paleologos said. "Democrats in the poll are offering tough love to President Biden by saying to him, 'You've served us well, but try to see yourself last Thursday night through our eyes. Hold your head up high, it's time to go,'" he added.
Donald Trump now leads Joe Biden 25% to 17% as the second choice
As for the second choice for voters who are currently supporting an independent or third-party candidate, the poll shows that Trump now leads Biden by 25% to 17%. Biden had the upper hand until late last year, at that point.
Also, according to the survey, 59% of Trump supporters are far more enthusiastic about their candidate than 29% of Biden supporters. If this significant enthusiasm gap persists, it may have significant implications for persuading supporters to cast ballots in the autumn election.
Internet upset as recent poll shows Kamala Harris doing partly better than Joe Biden
Netizens were furious after the latest CNN poll showed Kamala Harris doing marginally better than Biden in a matchup with former President Trump. One X user wrote, "Of course she does.. Why is this a surprise at all I don't know.. She's been channelled for the presidential role since she became Vice.."
Another added, "I'm never surprised by the depth the democrats can sink to in choosing their candidates! But this one came close!" One user remarked, "Lol...the 'astroturfing' begins,' while another wrote, "Any candidate who replaces Biden will be tainted with being the selection of backroom dirty dealing and will tank down-ballot candidates. No way the DNC goes that route. Harris has zero chance."
"And so did Hillary. we all know how that ended," commented one.
Of course she does..
